Oil Pressure (please read)

Hey I've got a question I have an 85 chevy 454 and this morning when I went to start it the oil pressure gauge in the cab was reading 60 psi, well I drove it around town today just like normal. Well I shut it offand came back to it, started it up and now my gauge is completly maxed out. When I got home I checked the oil and it was about a 1.5 quarts low so I added what was needed and now it won't come off the maxed out position. Can somebody tell me whats wrong. I'm leaving to go camping in two days so I need to find out what is wrong. I disconnected then reconnected the battery checked the fuse, it is ok, so I'm stumped. Help me out please.

Check the connection at the sending unit. If it's good ground the wire with the key on and see if the needle swings back.

Now where is the sending unit I heard it is in a different spot since I have a 454 and do you have a pic or a generalized area to look.

Why how many oil filters do you have?
The oil filter is on the drivers side of the engine next to the oil pan. If you look above that you will see the sending unit.

Now can I drive with the pressure sending unit bad or do I have to get it replaced pronto. Does that send the oil to the entire motor or just the pressure reading to the gauge in the cab. Another question, how can you tell if the engine is getting oil or not. And what does the engine sound like if it is not getting any oil.

If the engine isn't getting oil, you will know it. Throw some spoons in a wooden box and shake it, that is about what it sounds like right before it locks up.
The sender is for the guage, you can drive without it, but if you do loose pressure, you won't know it. If you pull it off and put a mechanical gauge in there and test it out you will know if it is getting pressure.
