88 diesel finally pics...what tranny?

Hey all!
Hopefully some of you remember me. But I sold my 75 Chevy truck with a 6" lift in december and missed her ever since. My friend has an 87 or so 6.2l diesel pickup. Its a 3/4 ton and in pretty good shape! Although the transmission crapped out...its still a decent truck. He is asking $1k. Is it worth it...are the diesels good or bad? Thanks a bunch!
Here are the pics...is this a 700r4?

They aren't a power house but the get good gas mileage. I would say a 3/4T 4x4 is worth $1000 if it is running. What does it look like?

I don't have a picture of it. Its brown, decent tires. Supposedly 78k original miles. 700r4 or thats what I was told. Interior is very clean. Auto windows (not a plus in my book) and is basically stock. I can get a couple pictures if you would like me too. I'm hoping to pick it up for $750 or so. I'm really not sure on the year either. Has dual headlights in the front. Its a GMC too.
Thanks!

Welcome back. If the body is in good shape and all it needs is a trans go for it!

I say yes, but I'm a little biased in the fact that I have an 84 6.2 diesel...and I will agree with Chris on the gas mileage...I get on average 26 mpg back and forth to work...

That truck is worth $1000 (unless you can get it for less)
Trans pic it kinda small, but it looks like a 700R4

I paid 1800 from a friend of mine about 8 months ago...he was asking 2500 but he's a friend so he cut me a deal...I think it's worth that...you might want to check out some other diesel boards for diesel specific info...
http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/index.php
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php
http://www.dieseltowingresource.com/
those are a few you should look at...the first two are pretty good, the last one is a little slow...the first one requires you to be a paying member in order to see the "good stuff" as far as mods to different systems and work arounds...the second link has most of the "good stuff" on the first link for free you just have to search for it...
Chuck.

They are alittle slow, you can get a turbo and turn up the pump to cure that. What gears are in diffs?
