No Taillights
« on: November 09, 2008, 07:37:49 pm »
A friend who happened to be driving behind me brought a problem to my attention. When my lights are on, my taillights aren't. My brake lights, blinkers, and hazards work, just not the taillights that are always supposed to be on. I haven't checked anything because I don't know where to start. Where should I begin to look for problems?

Sounds like a bad connection, do you have a tester to see if you are getting current to the taillights?

Your brake, blinkers, and hazards are on a different circut than the your tail lights. Do your front parking lights work? Dash lights? If not I would check the fuse. If they do first thing I would check is the plug between the bed and the frame. There is a ground wire behind the right tail light into the sheet metal but if it was bad it would affect all the rear lights. Still wouldn't hurt to clean and reattach it. If its not the plug in the rear I would follow that harness up the frame to where it plugs into the bulkhead fitting in the fire wall behind the fuse box. One bolt in the center of it I think its 5/16" or 3/8" and you can unplug all three wire harness's.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I don't know how the squirrels are in Wisconsin, but, here in Va, there was a time when the squirrels chewed through the wires under the bed of my pickup. I was so mad I bought a squirrel/rabbit trap and trapped 24 squirrels and sent them to a park on the other side of the interstate from me.  No more chewed wires.

It's funny that you should mention squirrels. My dad and I have a pretty severe squirrel problem in the backyard that we take care of... I don't think the wires are chewed up, I gave them a look and everything looked fine.
