Transmission swap 83 Chevy diesel
« on: November 30, 2008, 11:03:31 pm »
I have a 83 Chevy 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive truck with the 6.2 diesel motor with the rh700 (?) trans...the 4 speed overdrive.  All of a sudden, reverse no longer works.  Put it in reverse and nothing. And yes, I have checked the fluid level.  All the other gears work fine.  I'm concerned a repair job will be too much money.  I was thinking about puting in another trans...like a 350 or 400.  This is only a ranch truck so it doesn't see much highway time.  Does anyone have any info on what swaps will work and any comments on this option?  Another option is that I have a doner 75 Chev that has a good 4 speed stick transmission in it.  It is a 350 motor, 2 wheel drive.  Would this trans work in the 83 diesel?  Appreciate any info.

The stick is out because its a 2 wheel drive. As far as the other automatics, in my opinion you not having a donor trans means you will need to buy one. That combined with all the other costs, and labor to swap it over. I would just pull what you have and take to a shop and get it rebuilt.

Ditto on the above info.  The diesel will require a non-Chevy trans, so just any trans won't work.  Rebuilding what you have is the most cost effective solution.

Get yourself a book on the 700. Read up. It might be something as stupid as a stuck valve. to just go out with no warning?
The case might be different but the guts are the same as chevy 700's (with extra clutches)
