Pull the gear outta the trans. Just follow the black speedo cable from firewarll down and see where it joins into the trans, around the front of the tail shaft. I think it is a 3/8 bolt retaining it in. Pull it out and visually inspect to see if it is there or stripped or whatever. Look inside the hole whee it came from in the trans and see the ring gear. See if that is there.. there is a clip on the trans shaft that keeps the inside ring gear in place. hopefully that is still there, if not, have to remove tail shaft...4 bolts, driveshaft, etc. If all that is in place, inspect the back of the guage cluster. Unscrew cable there and see if you can turn the backside of the guage and see if needle works. Cable could be broke if all that checks out. Get a partner to spin the bottom of the cable and look at guage or the inside of the top part of calbe see if it is turning.
