60-66 chevy trucks
« on: December 30, 2008, 01:55:57 pm »
anyone a fan of them? I know a guy that's interested in swapping my 76 3/4 ton for his 66 1/2 ton. I think his has a 230 6 cyl and three on the tree . It runs and drives great and the body is better than my 76. Don't worry I will still have my 84 gmc that I'm restoring.

1966 Chevy was a good truck, great styling!  See if it comes with power steering and power brakes.  If not, plan on upgrading.  Front Disc brake conversion is a popular upgrade on those early '60s trucks.

The Stovebolt page has some good photos of these early trucks:

One of my all time favorites.  I have had a 63 short step, 64, and 65 longbed fleetside.  I would like to find a nice one myself sometime.  They had great styling I thought.

They are sweet looking trucks, aren't they?  ;D My favorite is the 1966 GMC.

Personally I think the 60-66 body style is uuuuuuuuuugly.  They are my least favorite Chevy trucks from a styling standpoint.  Anyone who disagrees is not only wrong, they are cross-eyed.  LOL.

No, i'm not a fan of them---mainly for reason that Mr. Horizon specified.  The only thing i dig is, on the gmc versions, the huge G  M  C lettering in the grill.  Can you imagine getting hit/run over by one of these trucks and getting those letters imprinted in you?  Getting hit by a car is never funny, but that alone would be kinda funny.

What i do love is the 66 heavy duty models.  i think they were called 6500, 7500, 8500, 9500?  That was and is a winner.  And it's a shame no-one has the grapes to style a truck like that today.

i also love the fact that not only did gmc have different engines than chevy, i also love all gmc engines produced before 74 which is, i think, when they quit making their own motors impractical as they may be.

But if you like them, then go for it!

P.S.  and no offense, but i must state this to describe how i feel:

If someone gave me one, i would sell it.  i can't live with this styling.  For example, i don't particularly like the styling of say, a 57 chevy or a 98 camry, but i can at least live with it.

i can't do that with a 60-66 truck.  It's psychologically uncomfortable to me.

I will have to check on the ps and pb. I have personally not seen this truck, he just said 6 cyl and 3 on the tree so I assumed it was a 230 ci and a long bed fleetside. Thanks for the link too.

I actually do like the styling of these trucks, I would almost venture to say that if I got it I would be the only person in town driving one as I have never seen one in my town.

This coming weekend is when I'm going to look at it so if I do end up getting it I will post some pics.

LOL... they do look a bit like a tank!
the rounded-line 87-87 trucks are a bit easier on the eyes, that is for sure!  ;D

A good friend of mine is a '64-'66 addict...he has had several trucks & many, many parts. I've grown kinda fond of them from helping him. There are many similarities to our years & therefor have some direct swapable, important items (front suspension, steering box, column shaft size, ect.) If you do get it, let me know, I can save you some time & head scratching on some things.
The one my friend has going on now has been lowered a bunch, a 502 Ram-Jet, Richmond 6 speed & a 9" rear. We've done some smoothing & added power steering, brakes & A/C. Still in progress at this point. Lorne
