My 88' Suburban Chopped Bobbed and Modded
« on: January 08, 2009, 11:21:44 PM »
i had a previous truck which i got my axles from, but $650 got me a working suburban, it needed prettymuch everything, it was looking at getting a new engine and tranny axles and all sorts of stuff

went ahead and herculined the whole forward floor and put in full power bucket seats out of a jeep grand cherokee, leather

full rattle can paint job, thanks krylon, also did the grill custom

then came the lifting and axle swapping
14bff rear d60 front w/ gov-loc in the rear and 4.56 gears all around
front lift-
8" skyjacker front springs
6" extended front shackles
rear lift-
5.5" superlift springs
ORD shackle flip kit
DIY 5" extended shackles
ORD zero rates w/ the axle moved forward
tires-
38 x 15.50 x 16r interco SSR's

steering is sky-manufacturing crossover and high steer kit

went to work at building an engine

cam is a crane cam truck cam, i think the specs are Lift: .440''/.454''
1970 LT1 heads, they have 2.02 intake valves with 1.60 exaust valves, the tops have been machined to accept a 1.430 dual valve spring
set of speed pro pistons which put me at 10.2:1 compression
670 truck avenger

then i decided that i was bored with having a huge suburban and wanted a truck, a crew cab at that, so i went ahead and cut the roof off

at some point in time i swapped the transmission to a sm465 / np205 case, and it was a great upgrade, i also picked up a lock rite front locker which is a beautiful upgrade, and i added hydro assist to my steering setup which helped move the big tires ALOT

built a swing out tire carrier for my full size spare

then i decided my back end was too long, had trouble hitting my tank and hitch on rocks when going up steep climbs, so i went ahead and bobbed the back off 2 feet, i added a fuel cell and pump that was enclosed in a sealed ammo box, worked great, i love it

and i just finished up the rear crossmember with the hitch built into it for maximum clearance

im sure i am missing some information here, i just dont know what it is

i have big plans for this spring, and am working on as much stuff in my garage as possible, my truck wont fit in there, just trying to wait out the winter

couple things will be a full poly bushing body mount kit with a 1" body lift for a little clearance, i will also be upgrading to a detroit locker in the rear, i have been collecting parts for a divorced transfer case which will be twin sticked so i can shorten my rear shaft and make my front shaft angle better, i also will be picking up a new set of 40" LTB's to add to the mix

i own an offroading website and club here in CT called kissmydiff.com, you can find a million videos on youtube if you want to watch them

this is just one of just my truck

let me know what you guys think! thanks

Cory

thanks alot guys

i forgot, this summer will be adding rock sliders also that will be welded in place of the rusty rocker panels lol

i also plan on adding tube to the rear at the same angle of the rear tire from the roof to the bedside, avalanche style lol, this will allow me to put a fuel cap on the side so i dont have to climb up the tire when i get gas (pain in the butt)

How in the world did you get that much articulation? I've looked at the ORD stuff but did not know you could get that much out of these old trucks.

What did you do to the paint before spraying it black? I want to do the same thing to mine. And what type of paint did you use, just flat black or primer?

one good way to gain articulation is to use the proper method when choosing shackles, you can figure out what size will gain you the perfect amount of flex, stock shackles limit you really bad and if you look at the front shackles on a lifted truck with stock shackles, the frame will usually have the paint wore off from the leaf flexing and maxing out

also getting the right shocks and brake lines help you out alot

as for the paint, i like it since if i scratch it up, i just hit it with another can of 2 dollar spraypaint

basically i DAed the whole thing and wiped it off, first i tried using flat black krylon with clear gloss over it, i tested it on the roof and it came out terrible, then i went back and just did a nice layer of satin black, havent had any problems with it at all, the only times it comes off or anything is if its over rust or scratch a tree on the trail, never by itself

its really easy and you can do an even layer without any lines pretty simply
