Can Somebody Identify My Engine Please?
« on: January 20, 2009, 06:00:30 pm »
Hi, I just bought a inline 6 cylinder for my 71 chevy truck, and it is supposed to be a 250 c.i. engine, but I want to make sure. I have most of the casting numbers off it,and I can't really find much info about the casting numbers anywere, can somebody help me? I do believe this engine has a integral intake,as the exhaust manifold bolts up to the exhaust ports differently than the 250-6 that came out of my truck, and the valve cover mounting flange closest to the intake is alot wider, than my engine that came out of the truck. This engine also has an HEI distributor in it,as were my other had a points style. Here are the casting numbers off the engine::

473483 -(passenger side of block)
The letters "GM",and it has the number "79" under it- (passenger side of block)
A179 - (passenger side of block, right behind dipstick tube)
7127J70 -(back of block, behind were flywheel would mount)
370698 -(casting number on head)

I think I have all the numbers correct, some are hard to see. Can someone help me figure out for sure what this engine is?

Thanks,Brian

Is there any letters stamped in the block? Have a carb on it?
The A 179 cast into the block I would think is the date A=Jan, 17= the day of the month and 9= the year in this cast would be correct for the info you gave on the manifolds 1979

Not much out there in the way of sixes, but I found this, yours ain't on it

I just found out that I had the casting number in the head wrong,it is casting number 370696,which shows to be a 73-85 250 6 integral cylinder head with 72.xx chambers. My old engine that came out of the truck, the head casting number is somthing like a 396204,it shows to be a 73-79 250 6 cylinder non-integral head with 72.xx chambers. I also do believe that the new engine is a 1979 engine,do to the A179,and the HEI distributor, and it also has a smog tub on it.

My question is,will my older non-integral heads, intake, and exhaust manifold interchange right on to my 1979 integral intake engine? I want to do this,so I can retain my existing exhaust, the exhaust manifold on the newer integral engine comes out in a different spot. Both heads have virtually the same cc chambers,so the compression would not change hardly at all.

 Thanks,Brian

I think it should. Lay an old head gasket on the new block to be sure.

Thanks,I looked at Oreillys web site, and the head gasket for the non-integral engine looks different than the head gasket for the integral intake engine. They may still interchange,I read on another website, that people changes them to the older style all the time,so I don't know, does anybody know for sure,or has anybody done this swap?

Thanks,Brian

The non-integrate will bolt right in place.  The blocks are identical..  I have 2 old 250's a 71 version and a 79.  It will bolt on.
