Need info on engine fitment for '82 swb
« on: February 04, 2009, 09:12:40 pm »
My '82 swb's motor is just about out of steam.

My goal is to find a used, but solid plug-n-play motor. The current motor is not original to the truck and other than being a 350 with an aftermarket intake/carb...I really don't know the history.

My question is, would I have any issues putting an older (pre-1982) motor in my '82? I've seen several rebuilt, late 70s motors on the local craigslist ($500-750 that include all accesories).

I can provide more info, just let me know.

One thing comes to mind for the older engines.  If your dipstick is on the passenger side and you have the exhaust manifolds that are above the spark plugs the older engines with the drivers side dipstick won't work.  I had to go with headers to solve my problem on my 86

The current motor has a driver side dip stick and headers. Sounds like the driver side dip stick indicates this is an "older motor." I tried to get a look at the engine ID, to find out what year it is...but no luck...its nearly impossible to see.

Yea...this truck was a 6 cyl originally. Every time I go to the parts store...they ask me what year the engine is. I always say "that's a good question." :-)

Don't go back too far though, you don't want anything from (1968 or 1969, can't remember which) or back because it won't have accessory holes in the end of the heads, which means no PS pump, AC or alternator.

I have used the factory manifolds with a two piece rear main seal motor before. Had to grind the manifold to clear the dipstick tube.
