back tire width question

Sorry guys... I'm not a wheel expert by any means... So I am hoping you can answer my question.

My truck bed has been tubbed out, but the rear end has never been messed with. What is the widest wheel I can get under the back?

Coy has a 20 X 14 I would like to stuff under there, but not sure if I'll run into to rear end clearance issues or not.

What do you guys think?

It really depends on how much it was tubbed.  The best way is to measure it to see.  we would just be guessing on you application.

I guess what would be the standard width on a truck not tubbed? There's probably no way a 14 would fit in a regular application.

You should be able to get a 12.5" wide in a factory one, the leaf springs are going to be the limiter.

Are the leaf springs still on the truck & in the stock location? Can you explain what has been done or can you post pics? Is the bed maybe off of a different truck that had the rear narrowed? Lorne

Are you sure Coy makes that 20-X14 in our bolt pattern?  I only see it listed for F-bods and Stangs.

You could be right... I was just browsing and saw the wheels. Didn't even bother to look at the application.

The leaf springs are still in the same spot. The guy who owned it before me took the wells off another 73-87 and cut the sidewall off and splics it in. If that makes sense.... These are the only pics I have handy....

If they springs haven't moved, you are going to be limited to about 13" if I remember correctly and be generic across trucks.  You can get a rim and mount it and measure the space you have to find out how far you can go on backspacing and do the same for the width.

With the leaf springs in the stock location, it's like you were saying "A standard stock width truck" as far as tire clearance goes. As Chris said...the leaf springs are the limiting factor. It looks to me that the amount those are widened, they are back about flush to the frame. If you want a low-buck way to fit BIG tires (18" or so wide), you can remove the spring hangers from the frame (notch the bottom) & re-install the spring assembly on the inside of the frame, with some wheels with a fair amount of backspace, your all set. A rear cut down or One from say, a Camaro may make the whole thing look "more correct", now the frame is the limiting factor, not the springs.
 What the previous owner did was really just the easy, cheap part of the job & nothing else. The bummer is if you don't want the big tires, it's allot more work to "put it back" than it was for the guy who cut out the floor.
 Mine are widened about an 1 3/4" (back to the stock placement of the springs) which allow for my 13" total width tires with reasonable clearance. Lorne

I'll probably wont make any adjustments to the frame or leafs and just go with as wide as I can... Hopefully I'll some on next week or so!
