The 3 speed will be fine behind a mild 350 as long as you don't abuse it.

Uhhmm, He's 16. I hope he's a nicer on his ride than I was ;D

If he has to build it and fix it himself, he probably will be.

Well to be honest my motto with cars in general is that they're built to be driven. And sometimes that means DRIVEN. so ill deffinatly upgrade trannys. What would be a good manual to go with?

go with a SM465 its a "4 or 3" speed

go with the sm465 if you go with a v8. 2wd tranny's are fairly cheap that i've seen around here(around $150 to 250). Try a local craigslist.com. Thats where i got mine the other day.
