Mirror w/light & stereo install questions
« on: February 14, 2009, 06:40:57 pm »
Hi i am currently wanting to install a few things on my 86 Chevy C20 2wd auto.
I have no manual or anything so no idea of the fuse box layout.

1) a mirror with map lights from a 98 malibu,
i have separated the wiring harness down to the two wires that hook up to the mirror, installed it on the windshield and ran the wire down along the back of the dash for now.
What is the best place to wire this up in the fuse box?

2) cd deck, 2 mids, 2 6x9s, amp and 10" sub,
i have cut out the metal in the dash to fit the new deck, the previous owner had cut the original harness and installed a sony tape deck.
there is a lead off of the fuse "power"(but no fuse only the wire), the other one i believe goes through the firewall. I grounded the new deck to the dash, connected the "power" lead to the ignition source and the other main wire to the power, twisted up one speaker and started up the truck... nothing the deck didnt light up, i used the same color wire from the other deck to this one and no dice.
the amp is 444watt sony and the sub is 250watt mounted to the center cab floor.
Basically i need instructions from scratch, thanks for your input.

This is kinda hard to answer without actually seeing it. I just put a stereo in my crewcab today. I found a constant positive and a switched positive on my fuse panel, and ran my ground to the firewall. In the past I used the positive and ground off of the cigarette lighter (I dont use it anyway) for the constant supply, and was able to use the switched wire to the original radio. Its gonna take a test light or multimeter to make sure the wires are hot that you are connecting too.
Once you get the deck to power up, the next step is the amp. It will have to have a constant power supply  ( preferably directly to the battery with a fuse at the battery), and good ground and a trigger wire off of the head unit to turn it on. Most of the time it is a blue wire, but it will be the one used for the power antenna. Also, if any of the extra speaker wires are grounding out or touching each other, the head unit will not come on. Its a safety feature used on most of the newer stereos. Let us know

The Fusebox is labeled, but any Haynes manual should have the diagrams.

ok stereo is up and running, only problem is i cant seem to find a constant power so it resets everything when i shut the ignition off, i tried a few different places in the fuse box but there doesnt seem to be any power coming through, even when i turn the key ahead 1 notch to the acc, the deck doesnt come on.

?-Has someone put an aftermarket deck in one of these trucks and been able to program it just once?? what did you use as a constant power to bypass this problem?

I have a mirror from an 98 malibu w/map lights, i have run the wire down to the fuse box but just cant seem to get them to work at all. It is only 2 small gauge wires that com off of the connection.

?-What do i need to get these working? do i need to splice them into different fuses in the box? can they be spliced into one connection or do the wires need to hook up separate?

Hook the lead that needs constant power to the ACC lablel slot of the fuse box.  You should be able to test it with the switch off by probing with a test light.

On the mirror, depending on how you want it to work (ING off maps on or maps on anytime) you need to power them either contant hot (see above) or ING switched.

ok i understand the stereo, i will try in about 10min

for the mirror, do i splice the wires together into the same slot or do i separate the solid into one slot and the stripe into another slot? if i could access them all the time it would be more convenient but i can live either way, so i guess i will go with the constant.
its the same slot as the stereo then right or is there more than one?

I would find some wiring reference for the light.  You never know if it is power on both sides or ground and power.

Id be willing to bet that the wire with the stripe on it is the ground. Test it against your battery, but put a 2amp fuse inline to it before you hook it up to the battery

i ended up with the wiring diagram from the manual, the wire with the stripe goes to the left I/p junction box, the black is a ground.
once i get my hands on a 2 amp fuse i will test.
as soon as this foul cold weather leaves i will post some pics as well.

ok, thanks for the tips guys, i hooked up a line to the battery with an inline fuse (2a) and secured the ground and poof it works, i am going to try to wire it into the fuse box first (maybe the previous ground was faulty) and if that doesnt work then its to the battery she goes.

once its in i will post some pics since it has warmed up here

stereo wise, i have tried a few different combinations for both the constant hot and the ign, to no avail i just cant seem to get the deck constant power. Next step is wiring up the dual battery and and going straight off that (with a fuse of course).
any other thoughts or suggestions more than welcome!
