playing with secondarys!!
« on: February 22, 2009, 05:08:28 pm »
well went to the junkyard today and picked up a bunch of diff sec metering rods. dr,ch,cv,dp.  just swapped my old "ch" and put in a pair of "dr".  adjusted my secondary air flap spring for the first time.  grrr thank goodness i had a extra carb cause i mangled the spring and had to replace it.   havent taken for a test drive yet.  changed all my spark plugs cause i had a set of v-power bot being used. my plugs that were in are acdelco r44, i changed them cause i think they are not the heat range im looking for. when i bought them i saw they were for more "heavy-duty" applications. opened up my plug gap from stock.045 to .051.    one thing i noticed was my plugs were a bit white so running lean(cause i dont have thath much initial advance) so i guess main jets and rods are next to play with.  ill keep ya posted!

Be careful reading the plugs, with todays pump gas it will look lean when it is not.  To see if you are lean on the primaries just drive at a steady state like 60 mph and feel for surging.

well i went out for a rip  and the result is great.  i think the biggest contributing factor was setting up my air flap spring for the secondaries.  might still tinker with it more see what happens.   the reason im leaning towards the "lean reading" is that this carb is spec'd for a 305, which i have learned are metered pretty lean as a standard, so the fact that i moved up to a mild 350 leads me to believe to go a bit richer.  but wow the secondaries picked up alot- gonna see if i can get more outta them without hitting a bog.  gonna try my "cv" rods tommorrow --b4 anyone says it--yes i know its kinda dumb to be fooling with sec's without doing the primary side cause primary is used prolly 90% of the time, and air bleed restr's and so on inseide the carb.  just starting to get really in depth into carb, i could always rebuild but never really understood the carb itself. ;D
