Rear Sway Bars
« on: February 26, 2009, 04:35:09 pm »
Does anyone here use a rear sway bar on their truck?  If so, what do you think of it?

I had a '90 Suburban that I thought understeered like a pig until I put a rear sway bar on it.  After that, it handled great.

When I bought my '86 SWB, it was lowered by softening (heating) up the front springs and removing all but two leaves in the rear.  It understeered so badly that I put a rear bar on it, which helped.  Then, after further analysis, I realized the front suspension was bottoming out (infinite roll stiffness) and the rear would also bottom out easily over bumps.  It rode bad and it handled worse.

So, I put new stock springs in, drop spindles, a flip kit and trimmed the front coils a bit to get it sittin' just right.  After doing all that, the rear rode a little more harsh than I'd have liked it to, so I disconnected the rear bar.  Shazam!  It handled great and it rode better.  So now I have settled on this setup for my SWB.

Do the LWB's need a rear bar, or does all the rearward weight in the Suburban cause it to understeer?  BTW, I have a rear sway bar for sale, if someone needs it.
