gas tanks

    hi guys  just wondering if it is "fairly common" to have leaky gas tanks?  ive been smelling gas lately and saw a huge puddle of dirty brown lookin in the snow.  looked under and saw some drips and smelled the drip it was gas fo sure!!!!!!!!  been about a week now i guess since the smelling of gas  but today was bad. too cold and crappy out to look until today.  so i guess im changing out a tank on the weekend      so just to clarify--- is this pretty common?

I had this problem when I had my 90 Blazer. It looked like dirt was being trapped between the tank and the shield. I guess there was enough dirt there to wear a hole in the bottom of the tank. There wasn't a lot of room between the tank and the shield.

thats exactly my problem too!!!!  i just wish i never put $40 in the tank last night.

It may be common where they salt roads, but I have never had one do that...  Of course cleaning all the gunk out from around the tank when you get it muddy/dirty helps too..

I'd replace the tank with a poly tank, check with Chris to see if they're available to him yet, if not, JCwhitney has em.

id love to get a poly tank  but this is my only vehicle so i need to have it on the road a.s.a.p   im waiting for the tank to come in as i write this, then going to pick up a portable propane heater for the garage and have at it!  will update to let chas know whats up.    minor question-  is there a gasket of some sort on the top of the tank where the pick-up would be.  i havent ripped apart yet  just wanna get everything i need b4 i tear into her.  much appreciated- thanks guys

k picked up the tank and it came with an o-ring and locking nut so were good there
 gotta prep garage so i can fit in there!!!

k so i got the tank out yesterday  wow  harder than i thought. (rust issues)   trying to find info on the actual tank saddle mounts that bolt to the frame. my front mount is half rusted off(towards outside of vehicle)  wondering if i can just clean up the rest of the mount and just install the new tank straps and put it in place?   guessing i should prolly find another mount, but i hate going to dealerships if they can even find it.   does everyone here run with shields on the tank as well??
