which clutch on an 84 250

i know there are 2 different types a fork type and a diaphram type, its a 4 speed, but was originally a automatic tranny, how do i tell before getting it apart which clutch to get

It is up to you.  I hate the 3 finger clutches, I put diaphrams in all of mine.
