headers
« on: March 31, 2009, 01:45:12 am »
thanks for all the info on my prior post.
i did have a few more questions concerning headers on my 305 stock motor.

someone had mentioned a possible spark plug clearance problem, will this be a concern on a 305 stock motor?

also i have seen the term "long tube" mentioned many times, what is the significance? i was just looking for a basic header.

thank you

Long tube is a basic header, short tube or shorty are for camaro and firebird originally and have found there way into many applications. Unless you get lucky spark plug access is going to be tricky on at least a couple of cylinders and keeping the wires from getting fried is going to be even trickier. I have found that plug wires with 90 degree boots on the plug end help greatly though you still may have to bend a pipe or two for clearance.

thanks russ:
is the claerance an issue on all brands of headers or are some better than others?
same with the motors, 305 vs 350 etc.

305 and 350 are the exact same externally so any problems with a 350 are going to be there with a 305. Some headers are better clearancewise than others but may not be better overall.

Accell makes short spark lugs that will help with the clearance issues.

Correct!  Here is the part number 576S.  Great plugs.  Only plugs that run better in a small block are Delco R45TS's

Only issue you could have is the Bump stop if you have a 4x4. Not sure if you do.  The Bump stop comes off.  Take it off then place headers. Then modify bump stop and put back on.
Let GM go belly up! I got what I wanted. Thanks for building the best truck ever.
