Engine Refresh
«
on:
April 13, 2009, 12:52:44 pm »
well i figured id make a seperate thread for my engine build.
since its mainly a topend uprgrade i wont be tearing into the bottom end.
except for a new oil pan and replacine the rear main seal.
heres the current setup.
91' 350 block bored .030 over
Silv-o-lite flat top pistons (10.5 comp)
Fully Balanced
Lunati 270-ish? cam
Center Bolt Heads
MSD ignition wires
ACCEL super coil
ACCEL Control module
Pete Jackson Gear Drive
160 thermostat
Edelbrock Performer Intake
Holley 670 Street Avenger
Holley blue fuel pump
Flowtech Long tube Headers
3.0 inch dual exhaust with 2.25 h pipe and Flowmasters turned down
Dual Electric Fans
New 3 row Radiator
feeding into a TH400 with a 2000 stall and 3.73 gears with a full spool in a 10 bolt.
no back about a month ago it started the over heating business and the cam has been going down.
so ive been gathering parts as i can to do the top end build so the motor can fully scream like it should from day one.
so heres the parts list of what i already have bought.
Eldebrock Victor JR. Intake #2975
Summit Cam & lifter Kit #K1105 (282/292 duration .465/.488 lift on 1.5 rockers (2300-5700))
Polished High flow aluminum water pump
New 160 t-stat
Billett water neck
No whats left to buy parts wise besides gaskets and oil ect...
SUM-141507: Steel roller tip rockers (1.6 ratio)
SUM-174000: up to .550 lift valve spring kit with locks and seals
SUM-G3964: aluminum water pump pulley
SUM-G3966: aluminum Crank pulley
SUM-G2968: aluminum Alt Pulley
PRO-141-130: Proform Tall centerbolt valve covers with chevy logo
and for now this will feed into my existing trans and rear end setup.
spool is going to be pulled in favor of a unit of some sort.
trans wise im torn between having a 700r Built and a 3k stall or just putting a bigger stall in my th400.
but pics to come soon.
be pulling the engine out next week.

well got the engine out today and pulled it apart.
found some things i didnt expect.
but cam was going down and come to find out it did because it was a lunatin Bracket master II 292 480 lift cam. ON THE STOCK HEADS!
water pump was wore slap out.
and heads are warped.
so did some calling and picked up a worked set of 300HP double hump heads and now waiting for the rest of my parts to come in from summit.
anyway heres some pics.

So I guess the cam lift was too much for the stock springs, they were bottoming out, which was wearing the lobes prematurely? That's a pretty hefty cam for stock heads! How did the truck run? Those headers look similar to mine, but I don't know what mine are so maybe I do now lol

update:
well after so long I've finally got the cam and heads installed. copper coated the head gaskets so no issues arise. took out the gear drive and went to a zoom double roller timing set( already degreed it ). so next hurdle is getting roller rockers (to fit 1.550 springs), studs, guide plates and hardened pushrods.
will post some pics up later this afternoon.

That's interesting you used a Zoom timing set. Since you degreed it, perhaps you already knew about this:

well shes done!
heres some pics and i took a small video. will have it up soon.
still lack some extension pipes for the intake and cleaning the inner fenderwells and firewall of dirt and stuff.
parts list ended up being:
461 casting heads
summit brand Roller rockers, guide plates, screw in studs
Proform Hardened pushrods
Vic jr intake
all new head bolts
Summit 1105 cam kit
Summit W/P and crank pulleys
Mr gasket polished aluminum tall valve covers
full gasket set
and re-jetted the carb for the better flowing heads.
and power wise?
its a LOT Stouter than it ever was. espically after about 2800 all the way up to a lil over 6000.
now next thing is trans with over drive and lil higher stall.
anyway lemme know what ya think.

yes I did.
I had to do a lil modification to the vaccume advance to lock the pick up coil in place. once I did that I just reset the timing and set it at 14 degrees for now.
I'm gonna get a lil more aggressive after I change the oil and get a couple hundred miles on everything.
