z frame and rear leaf spring relocation
« on: May 31, 2009, 11:22:04 am »
Hello guys
im new to the forum i have a question on Z'ing the front of a 84 C10 SWB and moving the leaf spring either under the frame or on the inside of the frame first i would like to know about z'ing the front 4" now it doesnt seam to hard to do but if i  also use drop spindles to get it 6 inches lower  do i still need to modifly the transmission tunnel i guess yes ? also what affect does it have on the steering shaft , any mods here????
i like the idea of Zing the frame and spindles as it would affect the steering geomertry to much?
i do consider myself a good welder and have decent tools to undertake the project!!
as for the rear i want to put the biggest tire i can under it also im not worried about modiflying the rear end its not going to be a drag  truck, its just for the look so either moving the leaf springs out of the way or 4 link ,also thought about zing the rear of the frame too and of course a set of wheel tubs the leaf springs on these truck are just in the way
any pics , help and suggestion would be great!!
oh im located in Maine
thanks

Are you wanting to lay the rockers on the ground or just lower it more. An air bag system will get you real close to the ground, and a 4 link in the rear is probably the best bet. It all depends on what you are wanting in the end.

If your not looking at airride, then you are looking into a static drop correct? Zing the frame is alot of unnecassary work just to drop a truck lower enough so that the tires and wheels will clear to be able to drive. I have I believe is a 4/5 drop on my tan truck with just springs and upper/lower arms and cant go any lower with the size tires and wheels I have. The ride is great, the low profile tires change the ride more than the rest

What are you wanting to do with the truck?  Just get it lower.  If so a 5/7 drop is about max of what I would advise on a driver with static drop.  There is a lot of work involved in Z'ing one to do exactly what you can do with components.

Z'ing does require steering to be addressed along with all the frontend sheetmetal alignment.

This has been asked A LOT.  Have you searched the forum?

no its not a daily driver and wont be  i want something different with my truck i havent done a project in a couple of years so its time ! as for the steering im sure i would have to modify the steering shaft some what ,but what i like about the zing is that with the use of 3 inch dropped spindles ,this drops the front 7in that with a stock height springs leaving the geomerty of the steering pretty much alone! now im sure with dropped springs it could come down more as for the rear im using a chris alston truck 4"X2" 4 link kit
here is some of my work before moving to the States ON YOU TUBE

Putting a drop member on would be easier and get it down pretty far (1.5" off the ground I think) there are pics here of one done.  It bolts right in and takes a rack making the steering alot better.  He also engineers better geometery into it.
