305 to 454 rawr!
« on: June 07, 2009, 11:16:23 pm »
yeah so a guy i work with is being forced to liquidate a few projects by his err warden.

im scoring a 120k mile 70's 454 with pretty much brand new accessories for 140 bucks worth of body prep stuff (gallon of por-15, some tiger hair, other misc. items)

it runs great, is still in a truck, the truck has a blown tranny. what else do i want off of the truck, as its getting junked.

he offered me the 3/4 ton front springs with it, do i want those? its going in a 1/2 ton, but i plan on lowering it anyway.... like a 3/5 from the stock stance, i almost assume i want those springs, but yer, i dont know.

what will i need to make this thing work with the th350 in the truck? im planning on an external trans cooler and a shift kit at the minimum to help keep it cool, and will source a th400 in the mean time to get rebuilt this winter when we work like psychos and have no time for any fun stuff. then ill rebuild the th350 and sell it, my buddy bought the tools to rebuild them with and has only ever done 1, so he said i could borrow them and learn if i wanted.

other than that headers and a carb and im ready to roll pretty much?

I can't offer any advice or answers to your questions, but I wanted to say congrats on that deal! 140 for a nice running 454 is hard to beat!

Just out of curiousity though, what line of work are you in that gets busy in winter?

You need the big 454 radiator and the front accessories. You need your existing exhaust custom fitted to your 454. Your 305 motor mounts work just fine on the 454. The 454 will work just fine with the th350 just bolt it up

I forgot to address the springs. I replaced my 454 with a 350 and the front end raised roughly an inch so I would think you would need a stiffer spring.

My last truck had a 305 and I put in a 396bbc. Lowered it and inch. I kept the springs and it did fine. Just get it aligned. I ruined the front set of tires in 300mi!

looking at some of the 3/5 drop posts it seems like the front ends body line is off with that drop so maybe i should keep the 1/2 ton springs it looks like. hopefully the ride doesnt get crappy with them though.
