[SOLVED] Problem removing an ignition lock cylinder
« on: June 15, 2009, 11:28:02 pm »
I'm trying to remove an ignition lock cylinder from a 1979 K10 Pickup.  I've done all my searching of the forums and I'm stumped....  I have everything torn down to where I can see the hole that the set screw should go into, but the hole has no screw in it, and the lock cylinder doesn't have a slot for the screw (like my new one does).  I've also tried turnging the lock to both the ACC and ON positions, then pulling it out, again with no luck - and the only "retaining pin" I can find is the black plastic thing near the end of the lock, which I've lifted (using a screwdriver) with no luck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Thanks

my 79 was the same way till i smashed it out with a hammer it ticked me off so bad i just took a hammer and screwdriver and that was the end of that, went to a junk yard took one out for 40 and all was done. if you do that make sure the shafts are the same one takes a bolt in the center "newer" and once has a c clamp style on it "older"

I already have another one I pulled from a junkyard (it oddly works with my key...), and I can get one from autozone for under $20 new.  Mind explaining the easiest way to smash the old one out of there?

I solved it!  Turns out, there is a small area that can be punched out using a small screwdriver, then you put the lock in the "lock" position, start pulling it out, push your screwdriver  into the slot you created to depress a catch plate, and pull...  very easy, once I knew to punch out the slot!

In that case you hang out at your local jail and wait for them to release someone.  Ask the newly freed criminal, he'll tell you how.  Then buy him a fifth of liquor.

If you lost your key?  Pick it, or even easier, use a bump key.
