Gas tank venting
« on: July 06, 2009, 07:12:02 am »
Kind of after the fact now but curious what I should have done. Responses may help others. My 77 tanks have three outlets. When I dropped the tanks one was plugged, one is main gas and one was vented with a differential vent.
The tanks has worked well for years with that configuration so I just cleaned it up and put on a new vent.
Montana does not have emissions testing requirements so that is probably why the previous owner stripped all of that off.
The truck is back together but when I was doing some work under the truck I could smell the gas fumes venting. Not real concerned about it because in 15 years of driving I never noticed fumes or had any issues but is there a better way to vent these tanks?

That is exactly how my 75 was set up from the factory. Mine does not have a noticable smell normally although it's possible you would smell fumes. I would check for leaks and if all is well leave it alone.

I have my tanks vented properly through the EVAP canister and I still sometimes smell gas fumes with my windows rolled down.  I've checked and double-checked for leaks; there are none.  I'm pretty sure that's normal.

thanks, they are not leaking-just a very slight odor when on the creeper next to the tanks. I am sure it is pretty normal. No smell at all up high around the truck so I think I am good to go.
