Mirrors don't seem to fit right?
« on: July 06, 2009, 09:48:21 pm »
I picked up a pair of new mirrors that are supposedly the replacement mirror for my 77. This is the larger ss swivel mirror seen on a lot of trucks here. I placed the black gasket on it and put it on the door and there is a pretty good gap in the center because the housing cover is curved (concave). My doors are pretty flat just below the vent window. Is this the best fit I will get? Will the cover conform to the door? Hate to drill holes and find out there will be a gap. Thoughts??

Maybe grind down the housing to fit (carefully).

Thought of that but hate to start grinding on new stuff. Had to do some grinding on the new rear fenders side marker openings to get the lenses in and that sucks. Aftermarket stuff has caused me to use the dremel and air grinder more than I'd like but I guess that is restoration at it's finest.

Is there a left and right to your mirriors? IIRC the door has more curve on the front side of the mirror than toward the back. I'm pretty sure the factory mirrior bracket housings are left and right specific to match the curve of the door. I wish I had a pic to explain better what I'm talking about.

I will have to look more closely at the mirrors. Perhaps there is a difference in the covers and they may have put them on the wrong mirror. I am starting to have 2nd thoughts about even putting mirrors on now. I may just pick up a couple of those clamp ons like some street rodders use. Drilling holes in perfect doors just worries me. Especially because I am having trouble even getting the covers to slip over the mounts off the truck. Funky spring clips at the top that lock the cover on are a concern. Maybe I just don't know what I am doing. I had to bend one of them so both would snap on at the same time and yet have the lower part over the angle where the screw goes. I hated the small factory ones because they were basically a car mirror but these "OEM'S" are a pain too.
Anybody used later model, chrome, remote adjusting (non-electric) mirrors that are easy to install? I am going to look at some truck pictures on many sites and see if I can find a truck with that type of mirror.
Thanks
