Engine is built...but i have questions.
« on: July 19, 2009, 12:45:44 am »
Ok, so I finally built my engine did the test fire and the break in, and I have to say the engine has some balls. Its loud it has a wonderful sound and looks great...I will be getting tons and tons of pics up in my buildup thread. So anyway today I got the engine back into the truck and I was under there and I noticed a tad bit of oil coming from the front of the oil pan seal at the timing cover. I freaked thought I had to take the engine out and reseal it. Just for the heck of it I decided to tighten the bolts some more to see if i could get it to stop. Well needless to say all the pan bolts were very loose. I mean VERY loose.  Like each bolt took about a full turn to a turn and a quarter. I was shocked I torqued them down and everything...I went around and check the intake bolts and the valve cover bolts they were loose too... Not it makes me worry do any of you guys think my head bolts might have loosened up? or my rocker nuts loosened? Or even my main caps or connecting rod caps? I asked my dad he said not to worry about it. Maybe I am making a bigger deal over this than needs to be but I have paranoia problems so I may just be freaking myself out for nothing. Can anyone lend some advice? Should I pop the covers and check everything? I dunno.

If it was mine, i would re-torque the heads. On the flip side, if the valve rockers ar'nt ticking, they are adjusted      correctly. really hope that this helps.

If you used steel shim head gaskets they need torqued again.

I just used the regular fel-pro head gaskets that came in the gasket kit, nothing special there...the rockers aren't making any noise that I notice. I think I might just pop the valve covers just to make sure.

I would run across the head bolts to verify they are still properly torqued.  It makes perfect sense that the intake, valve cover, and oil pan bolts were a little loose.  What you are experiencing is the gaskets relaxing a bit, so no big deal.  Just torque them down one more time and be done with it.  Since there are no gaskets at the main caps and rod bolts, if you torqued them down properly in the first place, you shouldn't worry about them.  And if you used factory style self locking rocker nuts, they didn't loosen either.

That makes sense. Yea I used the factory locking nuts on the rockers. Well I will get to retorquing the heads a little later on once I get the rest of the body stuff done. I wont be running it anymore until the cab is back on the truck so I should be fin if I leave it alone for now. Thanks very much for the input guys.
