Fuel Gauge will not move above 1/4 tank
« on: July 25, 2009, 02:52:47 am »
Anyone had a problem like this or know what it might be right off hand? When I fill up both tanks it will not show past 1/4 tank. The gauge will move as the tanks empty but slowly. Its almost like the gauge or whatever thinks that 1/4 tank is full. Any ideas? I will be tackling this tomorrow so hopefully someone has an idea so I have a good place to start.

Also, with the dual tank setup, is fuel delivered from both tanks at the same time or one at a time? And if I only fill one tank will it cause any issues or do I have to fill both tanks?  Thanks in advance.   Brian

you gauge will read what ever tank is selected. not a combination but there are newer tanks out there that will do this i forget what it was off of but i know it would transfer fuel from tank b to take a as needed kind of weird and complicated but thats what the world is today. vile and them can tell you how to test the gauge its self but idk bout that part

Yeah, I figured it was reading which tank was selelcted. Do I have to fill both tanks though? Do both tanks deliver fuel at the same time or does one deliver until empty and then switch tanks? More of a curiousity question than anything else. I am more concerned about the gauge problem. Thank you for your help though!! I appreciate it!!

If it has dual tanks it could also be a short in the switching valve.  That's what it was on mine.  Of course it's always the most expensive part that needs replacing with my truck >:(.
seams like idahok1085  did have the same problem i would get up with him

Well just an update for anyone that is interested. I replaced my fuel gauge with one from an 86 Scottsdale that I have. now instead of reading 1/4 of a tank on both tanks, it reads 1/2 on one tank and 5/8 on the other tank. I wont know that it is fixed for sure until I fill up again but I am pretty confident that it is. I also got  the Auto Gauge Tach working again and all the instrument lighting is working now. I also replaced the bench seat for one from an 86 and ripped out all the carpeting ( It was trashed) about 3 days ago. I am planning to put a bed from the same 86 on it some time this week or this weekend. Anyway, slowly but surely I am getting this bad boy all fixed up and looking good again. I will have to tackle some of the larger issues like the rust and oil leak at a later time. Anyway, I have rambled on long enough now. Just figured I would share my fuel gauge experience with everyone. Later. Brian.
