What speaker sizes to use?
« on: August 05, 2009, 12:49:02 pm »
What are all the speaker sizes of these old trucks? Looks like there is 3 in the dash, and two behind the seats if you look at the stock places. Not really interested in giant subs or upgrades above stock, other than the better speakers of today that will fit the holes. Anyone know what all the stock sizes were, or maybe somewhere sells a whole kit of half-decent speakers? I only have one wore out junker that still plays, so anything will be an upgrade for me. It's actually the only one left in the holes.

The speakers in the dash are 4" speakers I think.  The rears are definately 4x10's.  My suggestion would be to go with the kick panels Capt sells and some decent 6.5" speakers.  The dash is a terrible place for full range speakers.  For the rear fill, some 6x9" speakers would be best, but there are a few 4x10's still available.

In factory posistions, the outer fronts are 3" I believe,  Middle one was 4x10, the rear cab was 4x10.
bigblock73 makes rear mounts for 6x9's they are on the Classified section.
I sell kick panels mounts to hold 6.5" speakers.

Sweet ordered a nice set off newegg for much cheaper than they sell them at best buy and car toys. Though the 4x10 seems kind of an odd size these days. They only sold one set/ And it only came with 2 not 3. Need to find somewhere selling one 4x10 for the middle.

You might consider leaving out the 4x10 in the middle.  It's only one speaker so you won't have "stereo" sound.  You could also build a bracket or plate to put two 3.5" speakers in the 4x10 hole.  I have a template of the one I used in my interior thread -- member's projects section 83 K5.  It worked great!

The 3" ones on either side of the dash will replace with 3.5" speakers perfectly.  I put 600Hz bass blockers on my 3.5" speakers and that helped A LOT.

I tried using 2 infinity 3.5 in the dash. I thought they sounded bad and brought them back to best buy. I found  a "kicker" 4x10 to use in my dash and it sounds really great and i use 2 6x9s behind the seat and run them with an amplifier. it actually has quite impressive sound considering the speaker sizes. I will probabably add some tweets to the dash sometime in the future. If u can find somebody that sells kicker i am sure that they can get a 4x10
