77 clutch adjustment problem
« on: August 12, 2009, 10:17:12 am »
When I restored my truck I put in new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, & clutch fork. Also, new brass pilot bushing (?) in the crank end. Adjusted the clutch and had it a little loose so tightened it up to give about 1 to 1 1/2 inches of clutch pedal play and I like the point the clutch engages. Problem I have now is that the clutch pedal doesn't quite disengage all the way and I can feel and hear what I think is the throw out bearing being slightly engaged. When I pull the clutch pedal up 1/4 inch and hold it, the sound goes away and things are fine.
When I bought the truck in 92 it had two springs under the dash and I had to stand on the clutch so I removed the one that had been added. At the time I assumed one was factory correct. Ran it 70,000 miles and throw out bearing and pressure plate were fine when I tore the truck down. I suspect the extra spring was added to eliminate the problem I have now. I read a post from 2007 by Captakos that suggested replacing the bushings under the dash. Will check them but just wondering if I am on the right track or if there is something I am missing. Guess I could take the clutch adjustment out a little but when I do that the push rod gets a little loose in the fork even though I have a good spring. I really don't want to add a spring under the dash because the clutch engages pretty firm now. Left knee is getting weary as it is with 4spd & 4.10's. Thanks, will not be offended if told I idid (or am) doing something wrong. Suggestions??

If I remember correctly there are 2 springs under the dash.
stiffness of the clutch is dictated by the type of clutch, what kind did you put in it?
3 finger or diaphragm?

3 finger and perhaps I should revisit the idea of having two springs under the dash. I can always add one and see if it helps. Wish I hadn't done 3 finger. I think they are much stiffer. Anyone out there have a 76, 77 with two springs under the dash on the clutch pedal arm???

I will have to dig it up, but I can look at my 73 setup.
I can tell you that the springs only hold tension on the peddle to keep them from flopping around under the dash, and the ones on the the fork are there to keep tension on them also.

Your high pressure is from the 3 finger clutch.  I replace all of mine with diaphram clutches.

Yesterday I checked closely under the dash and I have no play in the clutch pedal. Spring is pulling it up tight and no side play or looseness anywhere. The last time I adjusted the clutch I was getting noise unless I pulled up hard on the clutch pedal with my foot. When I adjusted it yesterday, I decided to throw another light spring from the frame to the clutch fork in addition to the one from the fork to the clutch lever. I think that may have solved the problem but won't know until I take it for a ride. Just seems like the fork was not fully disengaging despite no binding anywhere and well greased clutch (?)lever. My clutch pedal now has about 2 1/2 inches until resistance when depressing it. Book says 1 1/2 to 2 so I may take it out a little today. Clutch engages about a 1 1/2" off the floor and not fond of that. Seems like that is too soon. Any thoughts and advice welcome.
