Turn signal arm
« on: August 25, 2009, 06:10:42 pm »
I have a 76 3/4 ton 2wd that I am working on / restoring and I have one of the new cruise control units from a suburban and need a control for it. I was wondering if I could use one off of an 84 or newer pickup. And also how hard is it to change the old for the new. I only want the arm not the switch. I know that I can get a slip on one. But would like to make it look more original.

I just found the answer to my question....  Nope won't work.  So I am off to the wrecking yard to find a multi-function arm. I hope with a little machine work I can make a coupler and make it look kind of stock.

One other option is putting a newer column in it.  Being a 76 you would need the entire shaft to the steering box.  The wiring isn't that hard to figure out if you want to convert the wiper/dimmer.  I did that to a 82 I put a tilt wheel column in.  I made a blank to cover where the wiper switch in the dash went.  My $.02

That is an idea. I might just do that. I have re-done the dash to take out all the gauges. So now the instrument cluster is flat with a 7 inch wide screen in the middle. So the wiper switch and heater controls are covered. The fan controls are now push buttons. And the heat/defrost controls will be ran by servos. Here is a picture of what the instrument cluster will look like. I have not put it in the truck yet but it works good on the bench.

The 2 numbers on the upper left are inside and outside temp.  The small gauges are water temp, oil pressure, left and right tanks. The bottom numbers are the gallons of gas in the tanks. And I used the 150mph so that 75 is almost straight up. I can't remember where I found the graphic for the instruments.
