Do I need the 5 pc.?
« on: September 11, 2009, 05:56:57 am »
Trying to figure out if I need the 5 pc. cab repair.  I hope to get the seat and carpet out this weekend, but I have already pulled the carpet back on the passenger side.  It looks like my cab floor support is rusted badly a few inches from the inner rocker, inner and outer rocker need replaced, and a small patch of the floor about 6" x 8" just above the rocker side of the cab floor support.  The cab corner on that side is perfect (for some reason).  So I think I need a cab floor support, inner and outer rocker, and a small piece of metal welded in the floor.  The driver's side is a little worse and I may find that I need the entire 5 pc. replacement.  My question is this:  Would I be better off buying those individual pieces or buying a LH and RH 5 pc. kit?  On the passenger side I would have an extra cab corner and wouldn't need much of the floor pan.  Since the floor supports on both sides are only rotted out three or four inches away from the rocker, should I use a slip on replacement or is the oem style a much better repair?  What is the cost to ship a LH and RH 5 pc. to kentucky?  This is important because I can get all of these parts locally at a pretty low cost without paying shipping (with the exception of the floor support, which I would have to order and ship).  I don't see individual pieces on this website--have I missed that or are these pieces only sold as the 5pc. set?  O.K., that was several questions.  Sorry about the length.

If you get them from me buying the kit basically you are getting 1 piece free.
Honestly I would pull it down enough to evaluate it, You never know how bad it is until you pull it apart.

The standard 5 piece kit comes with just a 9" wide floor, the standard floor and extended floor is extra.
All parts in the kit are available separately in the catalog.
I wouldn't use the slip on rocker, just makes a place to trap dirt/moisture.
It is around $50 to ship to Kentucky since it would be at least 2 boxes, the catalog will tell you the cost before you pay also.

the 9" wide floor strip is only available in the standard 5 piece kit, the other pans are optional.

Yeah, your pricing is pretty good.  Even if I have one extra piece, Its not a bad deal.  If I have an extra cab corner and floor pan that I don't need it might be a little iffy.  What is the shipping cost?  What do you mean by "pull it down?"  With the carpet pulled back I can see most everything involved, so I just wonder if you mean I should start cutting out the rusted metal?  At least on my passenger side the floor pans are a perfect painted blue, no bubbling from rust, and are solid (except near the rocker just above the floor support).  I am confident that the floor only needs a small piece replaced on that side.  The cab corner might be a different story.  It seems solid, but I guess once I remove the rocker and gain better access to it I could find problems with it.  Please give me an idea of shipping cost and whether or not there is a break in shipping price if I ordered all 10 pcs. at once.  Thanks for the help so far.  This site is awesome!

woops!!  I missed the last part of your post where you answered most of my questions.  Sorry about that.  I guess the only other thing is that I feel I have evaluated the passenger side and know what I need.  You said that I should pull it down to see what I have.  Is there an area that can be misleading and have more rust than I see?  From underneath I see the floor support (nearly half rusted away next to the inner rocker), and the bottom of the floor pan.  Bottom of the floor pan (underneath) seems to back up what I see from inside the cab.  From inside the cab everything looks great except just above the floor support.  What areas are likely to hide damage?

Oh, and by the way I was asking about a slip on floor support, not rocker.  My floor support is solid all around the bushing, just rotted a few inches out from the rocker.  A slip on does seem kind of cheesy, but seems like it would save a lot of work.  You pretty much need to replace the bushings and bolts if you change the entire floor support, correct?  My bushings look pretty good, but if I remove them to replace the floor support I just couldn't bring myself to put the old ones back in.  I'm trying to do a decent repair without changing a lot of perfectly good parts.  This won't be a show truck.  Any opinions?  I should probably get my seat out and post some pictures this weekend.

cab corners, inner rockers, the plate tacked to the floor support all hide rust.

I am just saying pull everything out and clean it off good, just because the paint is still on the topside doesn't mean the metal is sound underneath.

that was a typo, sorry, I to say slip on supports, I still wouldn't use it and I would put the bushing back in if I had to pull it out and it was ok.

I really appreciate the help.  I'll start tearing into this soon to make sure I know what I need.  If I grind out the rust on the floor pan to make darn sure what needs replaced, is there a reference point I can measure from to make sure the standard 9" floor piece is enough for me?  Would that come off where the floor pan is flat just before curving up to the rocker/kick panel?

I f one cab corner is bad; it is likely that the other is not too far behind. I replaced both of mine although only one appeared bad. Just a thought if your are going to get it anyway.

It is 9" back from the rocker lip.
