its like a work of art
you're right about that. I'll never forget my first rebuild on my '68 mustang when I was 16. The closest thing I ever did to rebuilding an engine was constantly taking radios and stereo apart to see how they worked. Then, 16, license..the world was mine. All I had to do to keep the blue cloud of smoke from behind my stang was to "simply" rebuild the engine.
What's the point in boring that old engine out. It cost too much. Just gimme new pistons and rings and get my heads back from the shop...all's good....until one day coming down I-95 a couple of years later (Yeah, i was surprised it lasted that long) doing about 80 between Wash, D.C. and Richmond and she blew a ring and smoke filled the cockpit. That was fun.
Did I mention I couldn't figure out why I had an extra piece that came from the engine on that rebuild? Then It became apparent when she sounded like a diesel on first start up. That piece was the rod that goes from the bottom of the distributor down to the oil pump. OUCH! I figured i didn't need that piece. Well, I quickly shut her down and unscrewed the oil filter. Yep, the oil pump didn't even know the engine was running. Good thing I coated everything in that old STP thick oil treatment during assembly. Needless to say, never made that mistake again.
Have fun!!
