can't find a replacement detent cable!!
« on: September 27, 2009, 05:28:53 pm »
The detent cable on my 82 (350/th350) broke, and i have been searching for a new one.   The truck is a 4wd, and all the cables i have found are for a 2wd 350/th350, or a 305/th350 2wd/4wd (they are the same part number).   Can i use the one for the 305?
What is the easiest way to determine which one i need?  measure the length and find one close to it?
Captkaos, do you offer these through the site?   i could not find them online...

thanks,
phil

The 305 cable should be exactly the same.

Do you still have your 73 parts truck. The one from that should fit your 82.

Good luck, as I recall both of your rigs ran turbo 350's, you should be all set.

well, i looked at the cable on my 73 and it is different than the one on my 82.   the 73 looks like this:

while my 82 looks like this:

anyone know what the second one is for?   I have no idea if it's the right one on my 82, but i know it's a 350/th350 combo.  please point me in the right direction!!!!

thanks,
phil

The second one is for a 700r4.
The first one with the slot is for the th350.

If I was a betting man I would say that at one time your 82 had a 700R4 in it and someone used a turbo 350 conversion kit when they installed the turbo 350.
These kits come with a new crimp on end for the tranny side of the detent cable. This allows you to use the stock 700R4 detent cable on the turbo 350.
You should be able to run the detent cable from your 73.

i do know that at from the factory it had a 305 in it (according to the glove box sticker, now has a 355)   but it didnt say anything about the transmission.   the one on the 73 has a badly rusted spring, so i think i will pick up a new one tomorrow.    is the adjustment for this style detent cable the same as described in the tech article or is there a difference?

ok so an update....

I bought a new detent cable for the 82 (350 th350) and used my 73 as a reference when ordering it at the local parts place.    it fit right into the transmission, but when i ran it up to the carb it is too long by about 2-3 inches.    are there different lengths of these cables?  or do i have the wrong linkage on the carb??

pic for reference... ( i know they are blurry but you get the picture)

Maybe post up a pic of the bracket?  To me it does look a couple inches to long.  I'll check in the daylight how the kickdown is rigged on my '73.

true,   here is a pick of that side of the motor that shows the bracket. the detent cable mounts to the same bracket as the throttle cable.   (older pick before i cleaned things a bit)    thanks
