86 C10 wiper problems
« on: October 03, 2009, 08:18:24 am »
I have  a problem with my wipers.  The truck has intermitant wipers, problem is when the switch is selected to one of the delay positions they don't work.  I am guessing the delay module under the column.  My other problem is that the wipers dont "park" when you shut the switch off.  Any ideas?

Thanks
Doug

Mine had some issues a while back but swapped motors. You can get a reman for about $80. I'm taking my chances with a junkyard motor for $12.

I was guessing that a new motor was needed, but I was looking for a second opinion before spending the money.

Yeah I got the same problem with the wipers not wanting to "park." They like to just hang about 2.5 inches above where they should come to rest, which is at the very bottom of the glass. I have no idea what causes this though.

Mine stops wherever they are at when you shut the switch off.  It might be straight up , at the bottom, or somewhere in between.  It helps my reaction time to see if I can get them to stop at the bottom.  If I ever get to the track, Im thinking a perfect light.

I remember reading ( I think I used the "search" here) that it was the motor.  I know I've been checking prices lately for some reason.
Mine also stop wherever, not so much a problem, just bugs me.

I read somewhere to check your ground on the wiper motor first, should be on one of the bolts on the outside of the motor.  It didn't help me, but it was gunked up pretty good.

I got them fixed.  I pulled the plastic cover off the upper part of the wiper motor.  There is a contact breaker (looks similar to ignition points) that the 2 wire plug attaches to.  To my knowledge, this supplies power to the motor when the switch is turned off to bring the wipers back to the bottom.  Mine was corroded.  Cleaned them up and put things back together.  Now the wipers go to the bottom and the intermitant also works.  Guess if I have trouble again soon, I may just replace the motor.
