tilt column
« on: October 07, 2009, 04:41:22 am »
My 87 suburban's tilt column will skip down if you put a good bit of pressure on it such as when getting into the truck. I've already had the column apart to tighten the four bolts (thanks to capt chaos' awesome pic demo) but it had been doing this before that! Everything seemed ok inside, nothing broken, but something must be worn? Possibly the spring that gets held in with the slotted cap doesn't have enough tension? Any ideas? I searched but couldn't find anything relating to this, thanks.

It sounds like the release lever isn't seating properly.

car craft mag. did a story on taking out the slack in tilt columns a few mos. ago.  you could probably go to their website and check out the article.  i think all they did was tighten some things up inside.

He already did that using the article I wrote in the tech section.  His current problem is when you pull down on the wheel the tilt rotates down.
