87 GMC sm465 to nv4500
« on: October 20, 2009, 03:49:00 PM »
Alright, so I have done as much research as possible and I'm at a road block.  I have a 87 GMC v2500 4x4, 350 tbi, sm465 4 speed, and a np208 tcase.  I am looking at changing over to a nv4500 5 speed.  From what FACTUAL info I have gathered, the GM nv4500 will bolt directly to the np208.  Where I am getting stuck is will the GM nv4500 bolt directly to the 350tbi and allow me to use my stock bellhousing and hydro clutch setup?  The 350tbi's were all the same from 87-95 so engine side should be fine, it's the tranny side that concerns me.  Also, 88-95 had a passenger side clutch slave, as the 87 had it on the driver side.  Has anyone ever done this, or what adapter(s) will I need.  I would like the OD for the old truck because with 172,000 miles, its still gets 16mpg, OD would just be the icing on the cake.  Any info would be helpful.

The bolt pattern on the SM465 is narrower than the NV4500.

Below is a copy and paste from an email I got a few days ago...  I hope it is not out of line to post this up.

Brand New NV4500 5 speed 1T truck trannies and conversion packages available

We are still able to supply Brand New NV4500 transmissions. NV4500s are generally recognized as the best 5speed transmission ever supplied in a light truck. They have become popular conversions in older or light duty pickups wanting to upgrade. They are also popular conversions where going from auto trans to stick is desired.

They are available both in GM. Dodge standard duty, and Dodge Heavy Duty (Diesel and V10 apps). 2WD or 4WD. All have the late style parts, with the correct upgrades as needed for 5th gear retention.

A Brand New, dyno tested NV4500 is $2117, complete. No core charge. Figure $125 freight, continental US.

We can also supply custom configured NV4500s, for example: GM in front, Dodge in rear, or Dodge HD in front, GM 4wd in rear. Same price as above. We can still supply NV4500s with the GM 6.34 ratio 1st gear ($100 extra). We can overbuild NV4500s for 600+ HP Cummins apps.

We can supply conversion packages to install an NV4500 in Dodges, Fords, GM, Jeeps, Land Cruisers. Diesel or Gas. Packages can include clutches (we carry SouthBend, Luk, AMS, etc) Bellhousings,  flywheels, precharged complete master-slave setups, as needed. We have adapters to use NV4500s to replace Ford 4speeds, mate up to Ford transfer cases, mate up to GM NV4500, mate up to Toyota transfer cases, all sorts of stuff. Check out the web page for more data and tech info on the trans:

Thanks for the info.  Do you know if I can modify my factory bellhousing or who makes a kit(bellhousing and adapter) to adapt this tranny.  I already plan on spending about $1200-1500 for the tranny and rebuild.  I would like to keep this realistic, otherwise it's not worth the swap.

Why not just use the bellhousing that comes with it.  It will bolt up

The only problem I have with that is trying to figure out the stock 87 master(threaded fittings) to the 92-95 slave(plastic line oring fitting).  I would also run into clearence issues with the starter I think? ??? I just really wanna know if I can keep the slave setup on the driver side, as it would make life easier.

Why would you have starter clearance issues?  Both bellhousings are mounted to a SBC.
You could always get some lines made.

You will need a pedal setup out of a 85-87 pickup.  I am pretty sure you will have to buy an adapter bell housing.  I would check out www.advanceadpters.com or www.novak.com.  You will also need a master off of a 85-87.  The cross over line will screw into the 85-87 master and it will have a factory fit, which will be easier for you to install.

If you guys need any info, I just did this swap.  I started with a 1976 C2500 Crew Cab with TH400 and 454.  I converted it to 4x4 and added the NV4500.  The Nv4500 WILL bolt up to an N2P208 that was originally behind an SM465.  Unless you want an internal slave, you'll need to buy a bell housing.  I got mine from AA.  A bell housing from a SM465 will not bolt up to a NV4500.  At least not the 1996 and later Nv4500.  If you have 4x4, you wouldn't want the passenger side slave because it occupies the space that the 4x4 driveshaft wants to be in.  If you had a little lift you might be alright.  It's a fairly easy swap.  If I can help at all let me know.

I have a Factory NV4500 Bellhousing still attached to my NV4500 on a stand would everyone like to see photo's?  It came out of a 94 Chevy 1 ton Diesel , it has the same bellhousing pattern as a Small block and Big Block but the bellhousing to transmission is slightly different than previous trannys.

Thanks Cubicdollars.  You can see the difference in the NV4500 bell is the clutch is on the opposite side, still doable.
