12in wheel ?
« on: November 08, 2009, 09:55:11 pm »
Hey everyone just wanted to get your opinions, experiences etc. on this. I have a 76 chevy that I want to do kind of a mild version of pro-street to. I would like to run a 15x12 wheel with the stock width rear and the truck will be lowered 4-6. I would like to run a 29in drag radial or so. I plan on widening the factory wheel tubs 2in or so and then line-x the bed to make it look factory. My main question would be bs on the wheel, and is this a possible thing to do. I have a friend with a 71 that runs a 12in wheel with a 29x14 tire with the same thing I want to do but it's obviously a coil spring truck. Any examples or info would be great. Sorry for the paragraph and if I confused anyone just say it and I will try to explain myself better. Thanks in advance- Chance

Ok, thanks for the reply.  I was thinkin that it may be in the 7in ballpark, but still figure to take some measurements for the best fit possible.  Off the subject I have seen your build pics and you have done a excellent job. That is a super clean truck!

7" sounds about right, but it'll be close....I think.  My neighbor has 12 eagle alloys in back of his 78 and he has a 28X12 tire on it.  His backspace was 6.5 and the tire sits slightly inside the fender and has about 3+ inches from the leafsprings.  He's planning to do 30X14's since he's not lowered like me.
How much would a 29X14 bulge out from the rim on each side?  Is that what they call section width?  I think that's what's gonna make the difference for you.

I would go with 7" of backspacing.  I'm running a 10" wide wheel with 5" of backspacing.   The section width is slightly over 12" and the tire fits nicely under the truck, with about 1/4" to spare from the sidewall to the inner fender lip.  If you run a 12" wide wheel and 7" of backspacing, your tire should fit just like this, depending on the actual section width.  If you find that it's tight, you could always roll the inner fender lip to gain up to 3/4" more clearance.  You most definitely will need to tub as you described to get that wide of a wheel/tire combo in there.
