lifter goin out? i think
« on: November 17, 2009, 05:47:09 pm »
my 77 350, is basically stock. i have rebuilt the top end my self, with ported stock 1.94 heads, 3 angle vavle job, 30 degree back cut valves etc. i have harland sharp roller rockers on it w guide plates. stock cam / lifters, stock bottom end about 129,00 miles on it. i was changing out my carb spacer the other night after work and noticed a high paced knock which i believe was coming from the passenger side of the engine. my boss tells me that a noise like that sounds like a lifter going bad. he said to take a feeler gauge and slip under the rocker i hear it from and if it goes away, its bad lifter. i have a new crane energizer  cam kit that i havent put in anything, specs are somthing like 274 @ .50 and 450 lift i believe. with the engine having 130,000 on it would it hurt to put it in, i dont have money for a full rebuild my self, and really dont want to put the motor again right now. any suggestions? i need new push rods , its running on stock ones now, not heat treated or anything, ino tisk tisk with guide plates but had to use them. sorry for being long winded but any answers would help thanx...

Are the springs fresh?  Do they have adequate coil clearance, retainer-to-seal clearance, etc.?  What kind of compression does your engine have - 9:1 or better?  If all that checks out, go for it.  That cam will sound a bit choppier than a Comp 268H since it is a very similar lobe profile on a tighter LCA.  Don't get thrown off by the 274 since Crane measures their advertised duration differently than Comp, making their cams seem larger.

You really ought to be running heat treated pushrods with guideplates.

Are we talking about the same engine as we were in the above post?  Like Vile said, if you have the cam, lifters, and springs as a set, then simply install the springs at the recommended height.  I also agree that your gains will be limited unless you go with a better set of heads.  We are talking about smog 882-type heads aren't we?  If you are sure that your current "knock" (tick?) is a bad lifter, you still want to do it "just for kicks," and you have all the proper parts, go for it.  But, from a performance standpoint, you may be a little disappointed with the fruits of your labor on an engine with 882-style heads and significantly less than 9:1 CR.

yea its the same engine. the heads are some what decent. they arent the stock heads for my truck. i had bought them with a motor that i had rebuilt in school. i had polished them including the runners and bowls. as i mentioned did the valve job also and the were surfaced .007 i believe. they have a normal bowl design not like the original head that came off the truck. i dont have the numbers of the head right now, but when i put them on the truck it woke it up a great bit. so i think i would be ok with them now. because if i replaced the heads why not save up and rebuild the whole thing. i am looking at a set of proform heat treated push rods or should i spend more and get comps or cranes. would it be wise that i replaced the valve locks? and i have a question about break in oil. spend $55 on case of royal purple break in oil, or 25 on 5 quarts of comp cams break in oil, or simply buy the break in additive and use shell rotella t? and also after the initial break in what oil to run in it for next 1000 miles or so?? thanks for all the help event

Summit brand or proform push rods should be fine, same with the rotella. If the locks aren't damaged they will be fine to use over again, just make sure they are clean and seated good.
