How to start
« on: November 30, 2009, 09:42:47 pm »
I need to start my engine in my truck tomorrow. I have all the wire's striped out of the interior so key switch and all is disconnected. I have one of the hand held mechanics start switches, so do i just need to run a hot wire from the battery to the starter then i can use that switch to spin the engine, and i would need a wire for fire so can i just run a wire from the hot side of the battery to the distributor, fuel pump is not an issue. would all this work?

I ask cause i have someone wanting to buy my current engine and transmission, offer was 650 cash for engine 305 with less than 15,000 miles and transmission was rebuilt less than a year ago. engine has eldelbrock 650 electric choke edelbrock intake and vortec heads, mid range cam. all new water pump, power steering alternator starter, distributor wires. headers.  yall think i am giving it away for $650 for both or is that a reasonable sale.

With all that I would by it if I were closer, even though I am not fond of 305's with the low mileage and fairly fresh trans.

Just for the record i am not trying to sell this on this forum. Engine and tranny is already sold I was just explaining myself. I have had another call about it and just wondering if i maybe should of asked more out of it, as it is a perfect running engine and transmission.

I didn't even consider it the way you worded it.  IMO for the $ you are giving it away.

You can't second guess yourself. I sell allot of cars on Craigslist. If I sell it they day I posted the ad I think I sold it to cheap, but if you post it for big $$ it might never sell. As long as you get a fair price it's a good deal for the seller and buyer.

hook a hot wire thru a togglke switch from the battery to the B+ terminal on the distributor. Hook your remot start between the battery and the S terminal on the starter and let her rip. Before you do this, let someone here correct me on whether its the s terminal or the other terminal.

Are the vortec heads alum or iron?

If iron, then maybe it's not a bad price.  Although that is quite a lot of stuff for $650.

Most of the time, i don't sell stuff for "profit."   i sell mainly to get stuff the heck out of my garage.

Well, bottom line is in my opinion, i don't think it's a disasterous price---i've seen complete cars(WITH 350's!) go for less than that.  But the buyer IS getting a whole lot for the money.

For comparison, the 305 that is in my truck now, i bought for $400 in 2002.  You may think $400 is/was too much for a 305, but it came complete from Air cleaner(this is important for reasons i'll get into later) to pan, complete fuel line(pump to carb), all gauge senders and even came with HEI distributor and all pulleys.  So, when it came time to swap it in, since i had all the parts, i saved alot of time----if i had to fetch parts this takes time and as we all well know--time is money.   It runs great.

The point i'm trying to make is that everyone benefitted in this case---the guy i bought it from was probably happy that it sold so quick and at a price he probably thought was high (because everyone thinks 305's suck) and i feel i benefitted because i have a decent running engine that i could quickly swap in when it was needed with little hassle.

The fact that you're worried about it makes me think that you think the price is too low, but if the person already agreed to buy it(you're saying it's already sold) and you've already agreed, then it would probably be best to go thru with it for moral reasons.
