IS this an MY6 / 833 out of a truck?
« on: December 08, 2009, 07:42:51 am »
I bought this with the intention of putting it in my Camaro.  I believe it is out of a GM truck, although the numbers seem to reveal the cast was made in '78.. Any input appreciated.  It has the mopar bolt pattern, but a TH350 style rear spline and mount.  I'm trying to understand if it is an overdrive trans or not.

Any info would be appreciated.

Yes that is a A833/MY6
No idea what it came out of ? They were used in Chevys from like 81 to 85..

It was last in an Impala, 60s.  The seller cleaned it up, and bailed on using it. He took apart the shifter, so I need to figure out how that goes back together. He was not sure if it was an OD trans or not. Ultimately, that is what I'm trying to determine.

I don't have a FSM on the transmission, so when people say like "count the teeth on the third gen" I'm like "which one is that??" :)

Thanks!

http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-speeds/ODA833fourspeed1.htm  may help.  In the GM form they were all OD.

Got a Chilton or Haynes book ? That has a nice diagram of it
From memory (it could be wrong)the front lever of the trans goes to the arm on the linkage closest to the trans the top rear one goes to the middle and the bottom rear (reverse) goes to the last arm farthest from the trans

It's the actual shifter itself he took apart, so right now it's about 19 parts.. Once I figure out how to get together, I can connect the arms.

So anything that looks like mine, with the GM output shaft is an OD trans?

So there was in fact Iron cased OD versions? Good to know.

Thanks!

Happen to have any diagrams or pictures of the shifter apart?

Some guys don't like the 1st and 2nd ratios on this trans but, I dunno, I think it would be fine.

Do you guys happen to know off hand what speedo gears fit these?  Are they interchangable with a Th350 for example?

From what I have researched it was a very rare option.  The old timers that wanted stick just got the standard 3 on the tree while others needed/desired the SM465 with the low.  Going from memory less than 3% was ordered with the MY6 option.  I have seen them in vans also.  I bought a 1983 GMC just because it had that transmission in it.  Same gear ratios as the 700R4.

So there is an option for one with a tailshaft that can bolt to a transfer case? Weird!

The whole shaft and tail housing would have to be changed
