PowerTrax Locker Review
« on: December 18, 2009, 02:16:48 pm »
I just wanted to share some info, I know it's not a 73-87 but it does have a factory installled open 10 bolt rear.

I put a Powertrax 1921 Lockright in my 89 K1500 yesterday (30 Spline)
Installation was fairly easy with the exception of getting the "C" clips to slip into the spacers.
The trick is to rotate the unit and push outward on the spacers till the "C" clips drop in place
Another trick to getting the springs in is to insert a small screwdriver between the halves to push them apart.
Installation took approx 3 hours including cleanup and that's with new axle seals installed

I took for a test drive around the block, I could feel a little bump when the unit unlocked but the roads were wet from a storm.

So off to the local mud hole to try it out, being by myself I didn't want to get in the deep stuff. Due to the fresh rain the mud was very slippery, not Georgia red clay slippery, but close. If you touched the brakes at 3 MPH, the truck slid for 6 feet before it stopped. With the locker, I easily went through stuff in 2WD that I never would have gone 10 feet in with an open diff. I did a few starts and stops in the slippery slop, and the lockerworked fine in forward and reverse.

The roads are still wet down here, and I'm having fun. There is a noticable bump if you take a turn and power into it. It will push the nose of the truck like a spool will if you are not careful in tight slow turns (on wet pavement) if you gas it.

So far so good, I like it.

Is that locked all the time or do you have a button or something? Any long-term driveability issues? I want a posi in my 77 12b.

All normal practicality and rational money handling goes out of the window when it comes to my truck.

It stays locked all the time, until it senses a turn, then it unlocks
But if you goose it in a turn it locks.
No buttons, clutches, wires or air lines

Powertrax makes two versions
The Lockright and the No Slip
The Lockright is the more aggresive of the two, geared toward offroad stuff
The No-Slip is the more street friendly version

NIce Post Blue 82. Thanks for the review. I have been doing research about these units for some time. I have decided I am going to get at least one and most likley 2 for my trucks, one being a 10.25 Full Float 14 bolt and the other a Dana 60 since those vehicles are not so much hipo and no bigger than 31 in tires. I did talk to a rep about these at one time. I am sold on them when the funds permit. I asked about HP rattings and tires sizes. He says anything under 350hp you are for sure safe and probably more like 400 is OK, but 350 to be certain. As far as tire size, Max 35in tires. Keep those 2 things in mind, with a Lockright, and you should have a unit that will do well for many many years and not clutches to wear out. Also nice and easy to install. Even a cave man can do it. My other truck, gonna have to go Detroit Locker, to much HP, I hope.

I was looking at other options
But for the money and time, powertrax was the way to go
The truck is getting a fresh engine next month (5.7 TBI... maybe 240-250hp)
I need new tires, but they are not gonna be close to the 35" max

I certinaly agree, for the money and the ease of install that you can do it yourself with basic hand tools in your own driveway and not have to reset the ring and pinion, how can a guy go wrong with that for a stocker or mild power adders vehicle? Under $200 is a steal too. The cheapest I have seen them for the Full Float 10.25 14 bolt is at a place called rocky-road.com and I'd imagine they'd be cheaper for the other models too. If memory server, the part # for the Full Float rear end is 1955 if anyone is interested.

Yuck !!! So you are saying this one isn't a PowerTraxx Lock Right or it is??? If not, do you know which brand that is? What kind of vehicle is this out of as far as performance, big tires, manual or auto trans etc? Thanks for sharing. I want to know which unit to avoid or what abuse caused that.
