Need help identifying this truck...

Hi all,

I'm just trying to get help finding out more information on this truck for sale near me. The description simply states, "1986 CHEVROLET all wheel drive, AT, 3k. Perfect sheet metal, diesel 6.2, no title, front & rear steer."

The front and rear steer is really tempting, but the no title thing... well in Massachusetts, it's kind of a big deal/hassle. I'm just trying to decide whether it's worth it and get my facts straight before I call the guy.

I'm thinking it's some kind of yard truck like they use at warehouses - to move the trailers around. But I've never really seen anything like it. Either that, or I'm thinking it's some odd ball military truck, which I can't find anything out on either.

Does anyone know what this is, or what it was used for? Did it come from the factory with the rear steer axle?

Looks like backyard engineering to me. I seriously doubt anything that heinous came straight from GM.

Cool rig but your right about the Title. It can turn into a real problem. It's best you let me go buy it.
Allot of times with an oddball vehicle like this it gets passed from owner to owner without being registered/titled. Depending on where/when it was last titled it may be subject to a State Police Inspection to verify what it is. If it has "backyard Engineering" they may not look kindly upon it.

If it was a military yard bird, it probably won't go faster than 15 mph or so.  It sure looks like that's what it was used for.

Depending on the price I would buy it for parts if nothing else.

not sure about if you have any "friends" but some people (cops/law enforcement) might run a vin for you if you know them well enough, but then again if you just swap cabs its all taken care of.

i know it's not back yard engineering,   i have seen these before.  can't remember where or what they were used for but i believe they were used for either military or at airports.

Well, I do have a few friends... I duno if the guy will just give me the VIN though, I'll give him a call tomorrow and see what his story is with this thing.

It 's a military special purpose tow vehicle. The navy and some times the air force used them to tow aircraft around. They are also used by other services to move heavy equipment short distances.

Yup Gambit. I just called the guy. He said it was used on aircraft carriers to move jets around. He says the way it's geared it'll only go about 20mph... I duno. He wants $2,500.00. Even if I could miraculously talk him down to $1,000.00, that's still a lot for what it is. I think I'll pass.

Not yet, but that one will be a little slow for my taste. We dont have any rocks to crawl around here either.
