Dual fuel tank switch
« on: December 30, 2009, 10:39:45 pm »
I am confused with the picture below. What I am understanding from the picture is the "fuel tank selector valve & meter switch" is the motorized valve under the truck and the "fuel tank selector switch" is the switch on the lower dash next to the ash tray. Is that correct?

The toggle switch in my truck currently is not the factory one, but it works fine. I want to put the factory switch I have in the truck. The back of the factory switch I have has 5 wires: Pink, Pink/Black, Pink/White, Blue and Green. From the picture below, the only difference is the blue wire AND those 5 wires are coming off of what I believe to be the selector valve. Who is wrong, me or the picture?

I do know that color of the wire doesnt matter. It's the location of the wire on the switch. starting at the lower left, clockwise facing the back of the plug (where the wires go into) it is as follows on my switch: blank, pink/black, green, blue, pink, pink/white. There is a part number of 329854 on the switch and I found that number on a obsolete chevrolet parts list. all it says is "switch" on the list.

The main thing I want to do is know what each wire needs to be hooked up to.

Not too sure about the green ones.

Pink-30 - goes from the switch to the instrument cluster plug (gauge)

Pink-930 - is from the switch to the left tank sending unit

Pink-830 - is from the switch to the right tank sending unit.

The greens have something to do with the power, and the pinks are signal wires.

Look at your sending unit underneath the truck.  Is it a one-wire?  Mine on my 78 only has one wire going to it.  When the valve GETS POWER , it selects the left tank.   And when the valve gets NO POWER it selects the right tank.  I might have that backwards, but you get the idea.

I don't remember how many wires are on my sending units (one on each tank) but the selector valve, which I think that is what your referring to, I believe it has one wire. BUT I bought it from Pollak a few years ago and Im pretty sure it it is not the same as stock.

There will be only one wire going to each sending unit, but thats covered by the pink wires, I'm just not sure about the green ones.  My switch will have all the pink wires, and probably the green ones too (1978)  but I haven't had any problems out of a dual tank setup so i never messed with one beyond changing out the valve itself.

I looked in my 78 shop manual and the wiring colors, etc are different in mine.  I can  give you a copy of it if you want it, but the colors won't match up.

I peaked under the dash of a truck at the junk yard today and I saw that the one green wire went to the fuse block but the rest went to their own plug on the firewall, out the firewall and down the frame rail. Perhaps that green wire went behind the fuse block and then back up to the fuel gauge....Should have looked more but I was on a search for something else. Next time.
