Automatic shift linkage help
« on: December 30, 2009, 11:08:33 pm »
My truck currently has a aftermarket auto trans shifter (mr gasket or the like) which is mounted on the tranny hump. I want to change it all back to stock and I have all the pieces. I dont remember what year the stock transmission linkage came out of, but I do know the truck had a TH350. The problem I am running into is 1: The long rod would hit the spring shackle and 2: the lower rod shaped like a "7" doesnt fit straight in the "C" bracket on the transmission.

I do have thicker shackles, but I think that they would still be in the way with the thinner shackles. Check out the pictures and let me know what you think.

In this picture, you can see the lower rod bracket hitting the shackle and the long rod is sitting momentarily to the left. The "7" rod is in the "c" bracket on the transmission.

Here you can see the "7" rod sitting crooked in the "C" bracket on the transmission.

The only thing I can think of is either the rods were bent differently depending on the year of the truck and the cuped bracket on the frame is in a different spot. My truck currently has a new SB 350 that replaced the SB 400, the TH350 is rebuilt but should be the original and the truck does not have a body lift. i believe it used to, but I dont see that being a issue as everything seems to be in place.

If the shift linkage was modified when the truck had a body lift that could be an issue...does it look like it's been extended?

All the shift linkage I have now to switch it over is from a stock junk yard truck.

Ok today I went to a junk yard and saw linkage that was a little bit different. The bracket in the below pic shown in red was farther inboard, about where the green arrow is. It was a 700r4 I believe. Perhaps the linkage I have now is off of a 2wd and thats the reason it hits the shackle? What do you think? Should I go back and try to snag the other linkage?

This is the linkage I was talking about.
