Budjet Building a 10 Bolt Axle
« on: January 13, 2010, 09:10:24 am »
I saw a posting here asking about building a 10 bolt or upgrading to a stronger
axle. I looked back and can't find it so I'll add this new thread.

While in the out house clearing out my inner most soul I saw an article in the March 2006 Car Craft Magazine where they "budjet built" a 10 bolt axle. There is some pretty good info in it on housing ID, axle shaft upgrade and posi unit etc. It's geared towards building a car axle but it's similar in concept.
UH-OH  I'M GONNA NEED A BIGGER BANDAID!!!!!

Well I'll post what I've read about beefing up the 10 bolt.

Use a solid pinion spacer rather than a crush sleeve
Use higher splined axles if you can - 33 spline axles and 33 spline spool
use diff cover with lugs on the sides for utilizing braces
Don't use excessively loose backlash
Weld the tubes to the housing

I plan to do most of that.
