76 Olympic Edition GMC
« on: January 13, 2010, 11:26:22 pm »
I saw this truck on youtube recently.  Long story short, I got in touch with him and he sent me some info and pictures of his truck, which he said I could put on 73-87.com.  His name is Everett, and is a super nice guy.  I told him about this place...hopefully he checks in and says hi.

Was that package only sold in Canada?  Could explain why no one has heard of it and the paint scheme.

Nevermind, it's pretty obvious that it was, now that I think about it. :P Duh, the 1976 Summer Olympics were held in Montreal.

That's very cool. Right from GM, made for the 76 Montreal Olympics. Sometimes you get sticker pacakges that local area dealers put on vehicles but that's right on the build sheet that it was an Olympic Edition. Probably used during the games as a support vehicle. The hood ornament is way cool. Try finding a replacement for that!

In 1988 when the winter games were in Calgary, there was an Olympic Edition S10 Jimmy in white with gold accents. I used to see quite a bit of them around.

The 2010 winter games are next month just down the road from me in Vancouver. I saw a Malibu on the road last night with a magnetic sign on the side indicating it was being used by olympic officials. Wonder if any special editions are being made. I know none are being marketed at local dealers as special olympic editions, at least that I know of.

When the Canada Summer Games were held in Saskatoon back in 1989, they had a fleet of vehicles used for support, carrying athletes around, etc. My uncle bought a Lincoln Town Car that was used during those games and got it wicked cheap apparently.

Wow, very cool.  That reminds me of my Dad's '76 Bicentennial truck that had a flowing red white and blue flag on it that said "Freedom Machine" on the bed, lol.

One of the options on the build sheet was a bed cover. I don't see one in the pic. Factory tonneau?

hey everyone this is the owner of that 76 olypic edition truck. yeah i do know that the previous owner replaced the box with a later style box with the square door instead of round cap style. when i first bought the truck it had a worn out 305 out of a 85 1/2ton chev. lets put it this way...it only lasted a month before i parked it for the year till i had enough money saved up to buy a brandnew 290HP/350ci from GMPP. ive replaced the brakes and shocks and thats about it other than some really ugly looking fuel and brakel lines. its still has the original T350 trans, and 12 bolt rearend with 3.04 gears...good for the highway...bad for burnouts lol.  if theres anything else you want to know just give me a shout.

Well at least the olympic decals were redone.  That kind of stinks that it isn't a completely original truck because it is so unique.  But it is still unique and pretty dang cool.  Nice ride.  Oh I feel your pain with my 2.79 gears.
