73-87 Chevy Caterpillar conversion??

  Ok everyone, I was driving through town, and I seen a 73-87 single cab dually with mudflaps that said "Powered by Cat". I've seen this truck a couple of times before andthought that he just had CAT mudflaps. But this time I seen him, I noticed that there were two fluid filters (oil?fuel?) that I could see through the left front wheel well, and also two more filters in the transmission area. I have never seen anything like this, has anyone else even heard of such a conversion??

some of those filters are probably water/fuel separators.

Yeah that's what I thought, but seeing them convinced me that he has a CAT in there. I searched the web, all I could find was 3208 and Detroit conversions.

3208 is a "small" 636 CI V8 Cat.  It'd be tough to put anything bigger in there like a 3306/3406.  Something like a 3116 or 3126/C7 might be made to fit.

Ive seen a Chevy with a 3208 and a Ford with a 3116. the radiator is a big issue, the Chevy had the firewall cut back severally, and the ford had a custom front end/grille guard to house the radiator. Having worked on both of these engines over the years, I personally wouldn't want either one. The 3208 is a throw away engine, and the 3116 has a heui type injections systems, and is real particular about maintenance. Add to the fact that you could put just about any other engine in with less hassle, makes them not cost effective. Neat, yes, cost effective, no. Low horsepower and cantankerous.

Yeah, I agree, it seems that a Cummins is the best diesel conversion for the Chevy trucks. Its still a lot of work, but I'm definitly gonna try it in the future, got a couple other projects to do first!
