max tire size for a 10 bolt

 Im looking for some general info about the POS Gm 10 bolt front. Im taking an 84 scottsdale and cutting it to pieces to make a cheap trail rig entire front clip and bed will be removed and rearend will be shoved forward atleast 12" possibly more if I can fit in and rear end will be welded. Now what size tires are to much for a 10 bolt axle on the front b/c I have to change alxeshafts hourly? No body to clear and I will be running tractor tires no DOT BS I was thinking 9.5-16 which is like 33.5" tall if thats to much 7-16 are 31". The truck has a tired old 350 and my nemesis 700r4 transmission and Im not sure on the Tcase. Its just a cheap project I plan to destroy over the next year and longer than that if the transmission holds but I havent found a good 700r4.  O and driving habits I plan to stay full throttle almost all the time and the terrain is midwestern mud and hillclimbs no rocks to be found.

With that kinda driving, I would stick to the 31's. There are guys breaking dana 60's with 35's. But they drive hard.

My brother runs 37s on his dana 44, drives it hard, and has never broken it. My friend ran 35s on his 10 bolt with a 400+ HP 383 and never broke his. I run 35s on my 10 bolt, and have a strong 350, and I break shafts ocassionally,(usually once the U joints start to wear). For the price of a dana 60, I would try out the 10 bolt for awhile before running out and dropping the cash on a 60. You might be suprised.

Corporate 10 bolt = Dana 44, so if you think the 10B is weak then you are talking about the D44 also.
I don't see a problem with 33's and a 10bolt.

Main thing I always see getting broken are the spider gears.  if you are high mileage you may consider a set.  I had 31's on mine and the spider gears broke, but mine had over 200k on it and was carrying 1000lbs also.

I have 33 inch tires with 10 bolt and have used her fairly hard at Attica Offroad Park in Attica,Indiana and have had good luck so far.

You guys that are saying the 10 bolt will be fine are forgetting these 2 points. Tractor tires are freaking heavy, with massive lugs. Combine that with hill climbing and full throttle, the minute it starts hopping, you are gonna see breakage with the 33's.

 THANK YOU this is what Im looking for the lugs would be about an 1" tall if I get the USED rubber and taller for fresh so they will be much harder on the front end than DOT tires although only slightly heavier being a lighter ply and tube type. However I decided to go a slightly different route and Im completely ditching the cab,front clip,bed and puting a rollcage on and shortening the wheel base farther than planned. Im gonna try the 33s and jsut stock up on shafts and pretty much every other part.


Just to put it in perspective with my driving style I had a 89 Ford Ranger that was SAS'd with a d44 and with 34"s I was having a time keeping it together lol and broke alot of shock absorbers from bouncing around. I know its not the RIGHT way to drive/wheel but it is fun to toss caution to the wind and pin it.

If I were you, i would look for a dana 60 and a 14 bolt for the rear.....run the 33's and not worry too much about breakage. Cheaper than stocking 10 bolt axles, and a lot less work.

 Ive got a 14b hanging out but finding  60 for under a grand here is almost impossible and theres no way in heck I would drop a grand in this truck short of putting rockwell's under it or planetary axles(WAY out of my price range).

Look for older dodges. They came with the 60 in the front as well.....more plentiful and a lot cheaper. Only minor differences to a chev. Swap is easy. Some places sell dodge 60's for a few hundy.

Simply keep your eyes peeled for a potential deal on a 60, but in the mean do your worst. My driving habits sound much the same as yours, and the others I've mentioned. Yes they break more frequently than a 60, but its there right now and there is no harm in trying it.

Ive got 38.5 in. groundhawgs with my 10bolt and its holding up. im not As hardcore, but i put it through alot

i have 38s on my 44 and brake axle shafts all the time i think in the past 2 years iv broken about one a year. my buddy had a 10 bolt running 44" and has have good luck we usually run our trucks together in the same mud hole so i don't know if its bad luck or hes having good luck
