my 86 gmc k1500 swb
« on: February 03, 2010, 10:31:51 pm »
i bought this back a few months ago, been picking away at it trying to make everything just right on it..its my daily driver,so it will be a while before its finished, so far i replace the front fenders, hood and doors off of a 91 blazer,i was gonna do the grill and radiator support but i think the original look suits the look I'm going for much better, i put a fresh crate 350 with edelbrock intake and carb, bolted up to a th400,with a 3.42 gear ratio in the rears,it has headers and flowmasters, it has a 4in lift and sits on bfg 35's,as far as the rest of the body goes the floors are solid, the rockers have already been replaced, all i have left to do is alot of sanding and fixing small dings, a couple of small rust spots on the bed..

thanks, i live in new jersey and rust is a major issue around here on all cars but maybe even more of an issue with older chevy trucks, it was hard finding one in good shape, i looked for one for at least 6 months before a came across it. i wasn't gonna buy a longbed, i have always loved the swb chevy trucks and they seem to be even harder to find around here..i also have a 69 chevy cst swb stepside project im working on,and in the past Ive owned a 79 chevy swb stepside that i had all done up it was lowered and had a 350 hp 4 bolt main 350 with a muncie 4 speed and 373 posi(i loved that truck and miss it) and i had an 86 k5 blazer with a 4 inch lift 33's and granny 4 speed(miss that one also)

this truck is in a friends garage now,new floors, rockers, cab corners,I'm looking for a good bed for it,but am more focused on getting my 86 right
update---the 69 chevy is back at my house,i gave it to my son, and the rest of the work is on him..i hope he doesnt just let it rot out in the driveway

Chris has a lot of parts on this site for both body styles, and they are real cheap compared to other sites. if you have any questions about ANYTHING Chevy this is the place for the answers. wow you got a couple nice looking trucks. keep us updated on your progress.

hey thanks guys for the compliments...i wish i had pics of my 79 and my 86 blazer, both of them were quite impressive trucks and thats the reason i have a thing for 73-87..the 69 is on hold maybe even get around to finishing it in a couple of years,im not a big fan of the 67-72 body style, and i cant sell it,i inherited it from my best friend when he died a few years ago..someday ill finish it in memory of him,but on the other hand my 86 i love and will do the best ican to finish it by summer

always 1 step forward and 2 steps back for me...was about to spend some money on the body and paint but i have a major setback..the fresh crate 350 that i put in turns out wasnt as fresh as i was told when i bought it off some guy, it was running great until last week when i noticed the drivers side exhaust blowing white smoke, turns out i have a blown head gasket..im pulling the motor out on saturday and dropping another one in,,i know it sounds extreme but i cant find the $#*() i bought the so called crate motor from that supposedly only had 1,500 miles on it..i bought it for 600 bucks so ill just write it off as a loss and will repair it at a later time and have a spare..now the engine i wanted in the first place that my friend wouldnt sell to me at the time is ready to sell now..he had it in his blazer that rotted out and ended up in the junkyard, so he still has it and its rebuilt and has about 15,000 miles on it..i know this one was redone because i saw it in the making..its a 1971 4 bolt main 350 that was built to specs of 350 hp..it was never dynoed but it runs great and will be a nice upgrade for me, considering the one im pulling out is a 1989 350 that was pretty much stock besides the edelbrock intake and carb with duals and flowmasters..they rated them at somewhere around 200 hp..cant wait till saturday to see if the extra hp make a nice difference

ive posted a couple of pics here before..im almost complete with the truck, i bought the truck back in october and it was almost rust free except for 2 small holes in the bed, ive been delayed a few times over after having to replace the engine totally unexpected,i changed the lift from a 4 inch rancho block lift to a 4 inch sky jacker spring lift, i found the original rally wheels in my local junkyard,i just sent the truck off and had it painted, all i have left to do is replace the headliner, dash pad and i want a new carpet, and would also like to replace the bumpers front and back..here are some pics the show the progress..

The chrome molding really makes the truck stand out.
