need advice on junkyard finds
« on: February 23, 2010, 07:06:48 pm »
Starting the body on my Hunk-O-Junk project.  Went searching for a tailgate and doors.  Did find a set of "cherry" doors off an '88 Suburban.

Found a set of immaculate doors off a '77 but no badging.  im pretty sure they are after market.  how can I tell?  they are pretty heavy but shouldnt they have a sticker or stamping or something?

Also found a set of one ton axles under a 85 rescue truck.  whats a good negotiating start point?  I didnt ask about them yet.  didnt wanna seem too interested.  Thanks guys

As far as the 1 ton axles the local boneyard here gets $1000 for a dana 60 regardless of the gear ratio, there is no negotiating on them.
Sometimes it's tough to tell if the body panels are GM or aftermarket. I'm sure we have all seen aftermarket panels that are junk, but if it's a good reproduction that was aligned by a good bodyman, they can fit quite well. As far as the stickers on the door, many times they get removed when a vehicle gets repainted or when a replacement panel is prepped for paint. My 81 has replacement GM doors on it (not aftermarket) and there are no stickers/stamps on it.
Bottom line is if you are happy with the fit and the price, go for it.

Most of the aftermarket doors I have seen do not have the reinforcement plate to support the outer door handle......
