75' gauges in an 81'.
« on: February 25, 2010, 08:53:52 pm »
Ok...I have an 81' C10 that has a very noisy speedometer. I got a instrument cluster from a 75' C20, but it has a mechanical oil gauge. Can I still use any of it? Thanks.

You can swap the speedos without any issue based far as I know. I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will chime in.

Dont use the AMP guage from the older truck or there'll be smoke and flames.

The actual speedo gauge is making noise or the cable going to it?

My bet also would be the cable if you haven't ruled it out. If it is just take it out and lube it.

Yeah, it seems to be coming from the speedometer. While driving, if I put my finger on the speedometer I can actually feel the vibration. Super annoying.

Still could be the cable, try lubing it first, they like it periodically

Mine was the same, lubed the cable, now nice and quiet.

Its' the cable.  There is nothing in the gauge that will make that much racket.

It appears to be a 2 piece speedo cable...should I replace the whole thing? It also leaks from the cable connection at the transmission. Just so you know. Thanks!

Pull it out and look at it.  If it is dry you need to lube it.  If it is frayed, you need to replace it.

Well, I pulled out the cable a couple days ago and apparently it was loose at the speedometer. I bought a crappy "replacement" cable from a chainstore and it doesn't work 'cause it has a threaded connection that is supposed to fit the gauge. Of course it is a slip on so it won't work.
I going to just put on the old one and see if it stays on the speedometer tight enough that it won't loosen up. I think that is why it was noisy in the first place. Thanks!

I think you can still get the actual inner cable from NAPA.
