reinstalling motor?

So I had my 454 out of my 74 chevy k20 to do some freshining up on the motor and now I need to put it back in.  When I took it out the torque converter dumped trans fluid everywhere and this is the first time I have ever pulled a motor on an automatic trans before.  Is there any special way that I need to put the torque converter back in?  I marked it on the flywheel and on the converter where they were lined up when I removed it just in case there was a certain spot they needed to mate up.  I suppose I fill the converter with fluid then put it back on the shaft then bolt the motor up?  Any help would be great, thanks!

Well you don't want to "FILL" the converter up, but you do want to put some trans fluid back in it, but don't go overboard or it will dump on you when you are reinstalling it.  Once you get the converter on, spin it until it seats on the pump, then install the trans and bolt to the flywheel.

You need to get the torque converter seated onto the transmission properly. Usually it will slide onto the shaft until it stops and then you spin it while pushing it towards the tranny until it slips onto the shaft a little deeper with a clunk or thud. Once that happens its on and you just leave it. Then you bolt the motor to the tranny. Then slide the torque converter forward until it hits the flexplate and spin it to align with the bolt holes and bolt it up. You will need to be able to spin the engine to get all of the bolts on and torqued to the right spec. Bolt position won't matter much though. And yes, fill the torque converter as much as you can without spilling out when its in the installed position. The pump will fill it the rest of the way at startup.
